X-Blades > Blades of Time Wasn't that just a direct sequel/prequel/whatever though, even has the same main character I think?

X-Blades > Blades of Time Wasn't that just a direct sequel/prequel/whatever though, even has the same main character I think? Nope, the devs were very particular about calling Blades of Time a "spiritual successor", with a main character who just so happened to have the same name as the one in X-Blades.

Curse of Monkey Island > Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island.
another case of an artist ascending to a designer role.

Jeff Minter and the Tempest series, which is unique in that he got the rights to develop two official sequels in the 90's (the beloved Tempest 2000 and nearly forgotten Tempest 3000) before making his own Tempest inspired games with the excellent Space Giraffe and TxK. Then to cap it off, he was hit with a cease and desist in porting TxK to PS4 and PC from Atari due to it being too similar to Tempest 2000, before Atari U-turned and hired him to develop Tempest 4000.

Oh yeah, that was an unexpected plot twist. Wonder what they offered Minter to mollify him, you'd think he'd just tell Atari to go fuck themselves at this point. Also wonder what this means for TxK.

Wizardry > Wizards & Warriors (2000) Almost every Japanese dev that touched Wizardry later made a more or less similar dungeon crawler series: Wizardry Empire -> Elminage (Starfish) Wizardry Xth -> Generation Xth (part of the original team going independent, apparently) Wizardry Xth -> Class of Heroes (dunno how the relationship works here, but the first Class of Heroes is basically the same game as one of the Wizardry Xth titles, IIRC) Wizardry Gaiden -> Netherdomain (same unclear relationship as above) Wizardry for WonderSwan -> Dungeon Travelers (Sting) Wizardry mobile games -> The Dark Spire (Success) Tales of the Forsaken Land -> Etrian Odyssey (this one is a bit uncertain since TotFL was developed by Racjin and only published by Atlus and doesn't share any staff, but Shigeo Komori, one of the more prominent EO series creators, has Racjin/Racdym credits, so there might be some relation) In a rather broad sence, one could also count Grimoire : Heralds of the Winged Exemplar under this topic.

Spy Hunter (NES) > Battle Formula.
Though this is another edge case, since for the Western release, Sunsoft actually got the Spy Hunter license.

Tales of Phantasia > Star Ocean.
That's another odd one, because it seems like the marketing for Star Ocean tried to differentiate itself from its predecessor with its sci-fi theme, but then most of the game takes place in a generic fantasy land indistinguishable from the Tales games.
