The games are really nothing alike though (aside from being RPGs in the broad sense). Seriously the definition of "clone" in this thread is insanely loose. Do they even share any staff outside of the character designer? Seems like that and "Radia" in the name are the only connection.

So it's just like Genji and Onimusha then (also brought up in this thread). Tell that to Inafune: Keiji Inafune who also made Resident Evil 5, Lost planet and Dead Rising, plus Megaman and of course Onimusha pulled a major diss on Genji.
1UP: how do you feel about Genji, the Onimusha rip-off made by former Capcom employee Yoshiki Okamoto's Game Republic?
KI: First of all, please don't group Onimusha and that Genji game together. Personally I'd wonder about someone who says "I don't want to make an Onimusha sequel" and then leaves the company and goes off and makes a rip-off of Onimusha.

So the media certainly treated this as a textbook case.

Also, it's not that unusual for character designers to ascend to game director/designer: off the top of my head, Tetsuya Nomura designed Final fantasy characters and then directed Kingdom Hearts, Doug TenNapel designed Earthworm Jim's characters and then directed The Neverhood, and Ken Suigmori designed Pokemon's characters and then directed Drill Dozer. and indeed even Inafune is an example, having started as a Mega Man character designer and then moving to a producer--and occasionally designer--role.

I don't see Yoshiki Okamoto's name anywhere in Onimusha's credits! Does simply having worked for Capcom qualify him as "creator" of Onimusha?
And clearly there was some bad blood between Inafune and him, hence the disparaging comments. I still don't think it's a "clone" or a "rip-off", but that's irrelevant considering the two games were not made by the same people at all.

Sugimori is a special case because he's co-founder of Game Freak. I get the feeling that he simply never had the time or maybe desire to actually design a game before Drill Dozer. He'd been working with Tajiri for almost 20 years at that point.

Mechwarrior > Metaltech: Earthsiege Good catch! Mechwarrior 2 + expansions --> Heavy Gear (and maybe Interstate '76?)

Pizza Tycoon > Fast Food Tycoon, but only in North America, where the two games had different publishers.
