Why are they called graphics whores and not shallow or vain for example? Besides it not sounding as polite, it doesn't make sense to me.

Because on the internet calling people shallow or vain isn't insulting enough. Have to put the image into your mind of somebody who "gets off" from high quality textures and bloom and well, that's likely why the term exists. I was once taunted as "having low standards" because I like the graphics of Wii or DS at the time. It's all console war nonsense.

Yeah, but I'm wondering about the reasoning behind "whore" (if there is one). Wouldn't the developer be the whore and the gamer the john/whoremonger? Or are the graphics the whore and the "graphics whore" the john? That's still confusing but better than nothing I guess.

Because "graphics whore" is a fun and colorful term. It manages to describe a lot in 2 words.
At least for me, I can take it to mean as someone "someone who writhes on the level of sexual ecstasy for graphics."
On the level of "insult," it's about as offensive as jive turkey or man slut. As in, it's really not much of an insult at all. It's more like playful shit-talking between friends.

The word whore can also mean someone who craves something, like in attention whore.
As for how it originated, probably just like any random internet slang originates. It's also a more recognizable term than just using vain or something.

The word whore can also mean someone who craves something, like in attention whore. Ok and maybe something they shouldn't be craving or at least not at the detriment of others things? Then it does make more sense, guess I was just hung up on the other meaning and english isn't my first language. No this wasn't actually a joke topic, lol.

There's an artistry in graphics or getting something to run at a smooth frame rate with quality visuals. I think design is the first thing to get right first.

Sure, and in the end result the various aspects of a game are all interweaving to make the experience what it is, with the graphics also affecting playability. But there certainly seems to be an abundance of people prejudging games based on the visuals alone compared to, say, the mechanics or storytelling. Which is also encouraged by most of the industry itself.

Its just what some people do. It happens with lots of different media. There are people out there who judge music because of how something may be recorded or released rather than on the music itself, same for movies.

Also, anglophones just like adding "whore" after terms to create insults. It's almost a suffix. If people wanted to diss other people who eat cake all the time, they'd probably just call them cake whores.

Yup, it's more artistry than it is just pure technology. Silent Hill 2 and 3 are perfect examples of this, both games still look great, because the devs decided on an artistic design and designed a graphics engine to fulfill that design to it's fullest rather than focus on "cutting edge" which are usually the games that age the worse over time. This is why I don't think complaining about "bad graphics" is always shallow, bad graphics are as much a failure of imagination than it is just a technical thing, there's no excuse for not making a game that is in some way pleasing to the eye. Obviously there are limits to that, like PS1 and N64 games certainly look dated, if sometimes charming in their own way.

The ones who do it for crack are called crack whores.

There are people out there who judge music because of how something may be recorded or released rather than on the music itself, same for movies. It's more logical for music, though - there are genres where the whole appeal lies in the way something is recorded (lo-fi or drone music, for mild examples).
