The world wide instalation base of the 3DS is 70 million, while the Switch is at 15 million. There is good money to be had by still bringing games to the 3DS.

It's also a good way for new staff to get some experience on a low risk project although I have no idea if that's the exact case here.
Regardless, the 3DS got an unexpected 3rd wind, and the number of ports and remakes versus new titles is a sign that they aren't devoting too many resources to 3DS games. The only totally new one was a new Dillon which is barely even a C-list series.
Late gen ports have already been coming for a few months now although Nintendo is less focused on DS games than other companies. The general lack of 3D is a big sign that it's all because of the 2DS. I feel like the market for all of these are people not old enough to have played the originals or maybe not even born yet in the case of LM.
Excluding co-developed games, 3DS original games on Switch are going to be very unlikely. Dark Moon would require basically a full remake to bring it up to standard. It's obviously easier to take detail out than to add it in, so that goes against the low cost nature of these projects.

Nintendo appears to be making some filler ports on Switch too, but you know their original big projects are for Switch not 3DS. Third party is done on 3DS. You'll see localization jobs and whatever but all the major supporters are making Switch games.

I personally am happy for the continued 3DS support, but I’m guessing this game and that Bower’s inside story remake are the last two notable ones we’ll see from Nintendo.
And Luigi’s Mansion 3DS is probably just a fun little distraction they came up with while planning/developing an original Luigi’s Mansion for the Switch, which I’m 98% sure is gonna be announced before this year is over.

It would be quite stupid for them to just drop the 3DS. Switch games cost more resources, the 3DS has a large player base, and in the case of Luigi's Manion and Mario & Luigi they could recycle engines/assets from previous 3DS games. Also, not everyone has a Switch. I'm personally not that excited to see Captain Toad or Luigi's Mansion on 3DS, considering I have a WiiU, Switch and GCN, but I bet there's more than enough of those 70 million 3DS owners who are interested.
Not only that, but Luigi's Mansion, Mario & Luigi and Captain Toad are all ports and WarioWare is partially a compilation. So, they cost even less effort to make. All games that will easily make back the development costs, even if they're all being released over a year into the Switch's lifetime.

www.businesswire.com/news/home/20180118005439/enIt would be pretty stupid of Nintendo to kill 3DS when it's still selling so well. It sold better than previous years even. As long as you are making money off something, you should keep milking it.

Eh, maybe I'm wrong but I don't see what would be wrong with just formatting Dark Moon for widescreen, I don't really see why it'd need a full remake. Ooh, I'd love a third game for the Switch, after replaying the original Luigi's Mansion last fall I was very impressed and would love to see the series return on the Switch.

A 3DS is also easier to put in your pocket than a Switch with Joy-Cons, attached or loose.

Eh, maybe I'm wrong but I don't see what would be wrong with just formatting Dark Moon for widescreen, I don't really see why it'd need a full remake. The 3DS is already widescreen though 15:9 instead of 16:9. The main issue is that you have to take assets optimized for a screen with an effective resolution of 400x240 (~1/9 720p) and blow it up to a maximum of 1080p which is about 20 times larger. I've seen nice looking upscaled emulated screenshots, but those are working with a significantly higher performance ceiling. It's not a difficult task at all, but I meant that the work is more in line with a remake on the scale of a WWHD or TPHD than a simpler "remaster". Everything else aside, Luigi's Mansion was already partially ported to the 3DS during the system's development so it's even less work. If anything, it's surprising that this wasn't made already.
