Minor correction, it's Felicia Hardy, not Harding.

Minor correction, it's Felicia Hardy, not Harding. Thanks, I'll go in and fix it tonight.

"After coming to some measure of success in the local computer scene with ports of arcade hits like Bubble Bobble and Renegade throughout the mid-1980s..."
"By that point, it becomes essential that you make an effort to find as many of the superheroes icons as possible and ration out their use intelligently."
"It’s not so bad at first, but in the latter levels, you’ll often have to fight off the whole team, two-by-two, while they get stronger with each apparitionappearance:" ("apparition" tends to refer to ghosts or something with a ghost-like appearance)
"Firestarr is great against Carnage, for example, while Cloak and Dagger are better at clearing up a screen of minor enemies,..."

Damn. This was one of the first article I wrote, back in late 2016, but I thought I'd cleaned it up better than this. As a matter of fact, the second line you brought up has another mistake (superhero should be singular, icons plural). On the other hand, now I know how people feel when you criticize their work without bringing up any positives

Sorry about that! These things catch my eye, so I wanted to list them all first and then comment on the actual content afterwards.
"The sprites are oddly-drawn and the goofy animations are reminiscent of their earlier beat’-em-up The Tick." (adverbs don't require hyphenation)
"The game seems to have been balanced for two players, featuring more aggressive opponents that are constantly manoeuvering to get behind you and giving you only 3three lives and no credits to start with. The developers seem to have to realized this at some point and decided to compensate by packing the game with an extraordinary amount of extra lives, restorative items and superhero icons, almost always in plain sight. This starts around the third level, so that the first level is actually one of the the hardest in the game. While it arguably breaks the game’s balance, spamming superhero summons five times in a row and just staying out of the way while Hawkeye does all the work is pretty fun in itself. Things adjust as you reach the final level, where you must face the game’s ten10 bosses, two-by-two, before fighting Carnage himself."
More of a minor nitpick, but official HG101 style is to spell out all numbers under 10, then use numerals from that point on. Oxford commas are also standard.
Now, on to the actual substance! It's kind of weird to think of these games as being retro, even though 1994/95 are long-gone by now. Maximum Carnage was pretty popular in its time, but nobody else seemed to talk about Separation Anxiety once it rolled around. In a sense this is fitting, as the respective comic events each game was based upon played out with similar receptions.
Still, flawed as both games may be, it's great to see this period of both comic and gaming history being covered. Thanks for the write-ups! You win the official HG101 No-Prize for the month.

Separation was definitely rushed out the door, but being able to stop a beat-em-up and resume it later, as obvious at it sounds now, was a huge plus for the time, and it's still decent fun in its own way. I enjoyed reading the Maximum Carnage story arc, too, with all its obscure characters battling it out. And I wasn't being snarky, either, when I said I found Peter & Mary Jane's arguments oddly engaging. As cliched as it sounds, scenes like that really do make him seem more human.

I love beat 'em ups, but these games are way too hard for me to enjoy. I'm not a huge fan of Spiderman (to say the least), but these storys arcs actually seemed mildly interesting, but there's just no way to justify playing these instead of the gazillion of more enjoyable games in the genre (that even have multiplayer, or in case of the sequel, allow more than two players).
Nice write-up, though; this is the kinda article I feel sits right on here, given its somewhat well-known but hardly due to its stellar gameplay.
Speaking of beat 'em ups, any news regarding a book on the genre? I thought something was up in the air about that.

(Sadly)Only played on emulator. Its very good game but little tough for me. But i like idea using web for this move tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PutTheirHeadsTogether because can knock out two enemies at same without using super hero summon. Oh! i love it Green Jelly music in this game. Carnge Rules on title screen, and Mob Rules cover track.

Minor correction, it's Felicia Hardy, not Harding. For that matter, why isn't she called "Black Cat?" This article doesn't refer to Spidey as Peter Parker or Venom as Eddie Brock.

She's referred to as Felicia almost every time within the comic book arc. I know she's also known as Black Cat, but she was almost more a personal friend of Parker's than a superhero in those years, so whatevs. Not changing it!

I need to read the comic arc again (despite my hatred of comics I actually really liked this one) because I honestly only remember her being in the video game. Then again the main thing I remember about the comic is when Captain Jesus America appears in a halo of light to give Spidey a hand.
That MIGHT be better in my imagination...

That MIGHT be better in my imagination...As I remember it, he appears as Spider-Man is literally down and out to literally give him a hand: the panel shows him at a low-angle (from Spidey's POV), extending his hand and saying some reassuring stand-up guy line. He might even call Spider-Man "son", I'm not sure.

One of the songs sounds like Mob Rules. Anyone notice that?
