Sega's Kenji Matsubara said they plan to re-issue the Genesis.
Here's a bad google translation of the original Japanese Yahoo news:
And to that I say Yeeeeeeessssssssssssssss. I never had a Genesis growing up, and ever since the NES/SNES Classic, I wanted Sega to do their own version (and not those cheap 3rd party versions that are available). I wouldn't mind a SMS Classic either, with Game Gear titles since they were both almost the same sometimes.

So far these crappy 3rd party Genesis systems mostly had Sega titles. And the very few 3rd party titles were really not that interesting.
If Sega does come out with a competent product like the SNES Classic and if they actually add GOOD 3rd party games to the system, it will most definitely be more interesting than anything they've been doing in the past decade when it comes to Genesis.
They could include Castlevania Bloodlines (which has NEVER been re-released, not even on VC), Contra Hard Corps, Gunstar Heroes, that Wonder Boy 5 that only came out in Japan, but was released in English for Wii VS. If they want to have a really rare title in it, they could even add that Megaman Wily Wars that was only available through the Sega Channel in the US. Hell, they could even add Sega CD games which is technically part of the Genesis. Imagine, Sonic CD, Lunar, Shining Force CD, Snatcher!

Well, yes, there have already been a whole bunch of crappy Genesis systems, and there's no particular reason to expect that they'll finally get it right this time. There's definitely no reason to expect that they'll package it with anything other than the games everyone already knows, because something like this is not going to sell on the basis of the inclusion of relatively unknown games, no matter how good they may be.

It would be cool to have a plug-n-play Genesis system that were of higher quality than shit like what AtGames have put out. I'd hope that it has some games that don't generally get included in these collections, like Konami's titles (it's sad that Rocket Knight Adventures and Contra: Hard Corps and Castlevania: Bloodlines have never been ported or rereleased anywhere else aside from the Genesis).

I'd buy a Genesis / Mega Drive Classic console from Sega in a heartbeat, especially if it had HDMI, but hopefully Sega will take a few additional steps that Nintendo failed to deliver on their "classic" consoles: - Retain a cartridge slot so that the console can be used with pre-existing Genesis / Mega Drive libraries, and so as to give a slight boost to the console's homebrew scene and possibly encourage new licensed games. And this way if the console is successful as it should be they could re-print games, or game collections, for the console as well.
- Update the FM synthesizer section. This isn't actually a lot to ask for since the Yamaha YM2612 chip hasn't been manufactured since 1995 or so. Sega will have to implement a software emulation or hardware/FPGA clone, and the YM2608 would be a better choice to clone or emulate. The YM2608's design makes it backwards-compatible with the YM2612, but it would provide homebrew developers (and new licensed developers) with expanded sound options. It wouldn't hurt to increase the resolution of the FM lookup table either. That would be fairly easy, but if Sega wanted to go the extra mile -- and this is definitely a bit of a pipe dream now -- they could create an 8-operator design, similar to the Yamaha FS1R, that is backwards-compatible.
- Update the graphics section for 16:9 aspect ratio to take advantage of modern televisions. Obviously the "classic" games themselves would have to continue using the 4:3 aspect ratio, but it would be nice if an updated 16:9 aspect ratio, preferably with a higher resolution for the extra screen space, could be accessed by homebrew developers (and new licensed developers) with new games going forward. This is definitely a bit of a pipe dream, but I think it would really help sell the console. They could call it "the people's classic console" in advertisements.
One lesson Sega should take away from the SNES Classic and its success is the inclusion of a previously-unreleased game, Star Fox II. I know a lot of retro gamers who passed on the NES Classic because they had all of its games in their collection, but bought up the SNES Classic not only to play Star Fox II, or at least a version of it they had never played before, but as a way of showing support to Nintendo for releasing previously-unreleased material in the hopes that Nintendo would continue to do so.
Aside from possible prototypes and unreleased games, I think the following would be well-rounded selection of games to include with a Genesis / Mega Drive Classic console:
- Sonic the Hedgehog 3
- Phantasy Star II
- Shining Force II
- Streets of Rage 2
- Gunstar Heroes
- Landstalker
- Shadowrun
- Herzog Zwei
- Contra: Hard Corps
- Ecco: The Tides of Time
- Musha
- Road Rash 2
- Strider
- Comix Zone
- Micro Machines 96'
- Shinobi III: The Ninja Master
- Eternal Champions
- Starflight
- Mutant League Football
- Mutant League Hockey
- Golden Axe II
- Crusader of Centy

If they're truly moving foward with the idea, then i would want to see these games represented and i'm going with some of the more obscure ones on Genesis/Mega Drive: - Eliminate Down
- Slap Fight MD
- Power Drive
- The Ooze
- High Seas Havoc
- Garfield: Caught in the Act
- Verytex
- Devilish (just for the Kick-ass OST by Hitoshi Sakimoto)

Sounds neat, but it'd have to have some games that aren't in the Steam collection (that I already have in full) for me to consider getting it.
Also, they better include S3&K in this one.

sega releases digital/emulation based genesis throwback collection mega packs like every few years already, so i'm not too interested in the prospect of one that takes up room too

If it used actual hardware, maybe, but I'm not really interested in a physical emulator.

Sega is pretty generous with their back catalog, re-releasing games in compilation form or otherwise for next to nothing. The Genesis collection released a few years ago for the 360 and PS3 has pretty much everything you could want on the system that's not 3rd party. It doesn't help that the Sega clone consoles up to this point have been underwhelming. Nintendo places a ton of value on their old games. Even with the Virtual Console, Nintendo re-releases are much rarer and there's no way in hell they'd let a third party manufacture a clone of the NES or SNES, so the mini systems are a big deal. Of course, it also leads to them charging 5 bucks for a piece of crap like Urban Champion but whatever.

If Sega goes extravagant and puts Sega CD games on it, I could see that really flying off the shelves. If they put some work into it, they could even get the size down quite a bit. Minus that though, I can't see it being an (S)NES Classic level mania as Sega has been generally good about putting out compilations of old games and licensing mini consoles. There isn't the same amount of general pent up demand like there was for Nintendo.
Something with good emulation is a long time coming though. The PC collection I have is just ROMs packaged up with Kega and a front end, but everything else hasn't fared well. Maybe good emulation for once would be enough?

I’m hoping they’ll rerelease Sonic the Fighters sometime soon.

It sounds great in theory, but I am mostly interested at some non developed SEGA games like Vixen 357. At the moment, I am not too happy about this announcement. I have to wait until I see more stuff about it.
Yours sincerely

I' m glad to hear this, as the Genesis is too often overlooked. I would include:
Beyond Oasis Castlevania Bloodlines Comix Zone Crusader of Centy Golden Axe 3 (yes) King Colossus (license the fan translation or something, this game is good) Landstalker Light Crusader Mystic Defender Road Rash 3 Shining Force Shinobi 3 (or the whole Genesis trilogy) Sonic 3 & Knuckles Streets of Rage 2 (or the whole trilogy) Phantasy Star IV
...and probably some others I'm not thinking of right now.

They could include Castlevania Bloodlines (which has NEVER been re-released, not even on VC), Castlevania Bloodlines would make or break it for me, the lack of Bloodlines on the Wii's VC is in the fact the reason I got into emulation in the first place. Frankly I'm ambivalent on a Genesis Mini, to me the Genesis is the best emulated console out there and I'm pretty well pleased with it. But if it has a good enough library, including healthy third party support, we'll see.
