This dark fantasy Genesis side-scroller made by some of the designers of the Rastan games isn't very well-known, and it takes a deliberate effort to get past the awkward controls. Once you do, however, it's really pretty good. Dahna: Megami Tanjou

This is one of those Japan-only games where you have to wonder why in the hell it wasn't localized. There's little to no text to translate, no licensing issues, no Japanese cultural content, and it's in a genre proven popular in the West, and on a console that was then in need of all the support it could get. what gives?

True. The controls are difficult, sure, but it's a million times better than Sword of Sodan. Might have had to with the publisher, IGS (Information Global Service). Looking at their mobygames page, very few of the games they published ever made it out of Japan. They published 3 themselves in the US (out of at least 15 in Japan), and Activision published the SNES Aliens Vs Predator game, but Activision already owned the console rights to that franchise in North America (probably why the superior Capcom arcade game was never ported).

Yeah this one is pretty cool. It feels a bit like an upgraded MSX or SMS game besides the OST, which I like a lot too. Besides the drum samples it's orchestral FM synth done right.
