I got the idea of this from a thread at 1up talking about moments that justified the purchase of the new crop of machines. How about taking it further and asking what were the wow moments that stunned you and consequently justified the purchase of any console?
First and foremost for me was Ridge Racer on the PS1. When my car went over a bump and the car jumped and proceeded to bounce around in first person view, I was stunned. That single moment has yet to be surpassed, actually, in terms of wow factor.
I think this is largely because by this point, I had more or less stopped going to arcades, and so never saw comparable games like this in motion before. In all previous consoles, the wow factor was dimmed by the fact that the arcades always had something that looked better, and it was just the novelty of having it in the home that was impressive; with RR, though, there was no comparison for me.

I remember when I got my N64 with Zelda OoT and my dad got to the first boss Queen Gohma. Once that door slamed shut I knew there was trouble. Then a giant spider like creature crashed to the ground, that was my "WOW!!" moment.

I do believe that I nearly shat my pants when I played Outrun in a deluxe sitdown cabinet with hydraulics. That machine's still in the ol' arcade where I found it, and it still rules. ;D In Contra: Shattered Soldier, that entire battle against the robot running alongside the train is one big freaking ride. And when his legs keep on moving after his torso's been decked off? That's just too cool for words. Battling against Death on the mast of the Ghost Ship in Dracula X: Rondo of Blood could be my favorite battle ever against the bastard. It's like the final duel in a samurai film or something like that. Of course, I always love a good fight against ol' Grimmy, but this is one of my faves. I think just about every boss battle in the Time Crisis series is a total WOW and/or YIKES moment. Same goes for House of the Dead. But since they're my two favorite light gun series ever, I may be biased. Tee hee... Oh, and being able to roll up The King Of All Cosmos in We Love Katamari? That one always gets me. And finally, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and Justice For All are both freaking entrancing from start to finish. I think that's all I've to share for now, but there are MANY others, I guarantee you.

Metroid Prime for the GC is mine. The graphics were amazing and I was blown away on how close they got the Metroid formula into a 3D game.
Another would be playing Halo for the first time. I was sold after I first heard the menu music.

^ I have to agree with you on both of those. Most people hate halo for unknown reasons but it really is a great game. I remember when Halo 1 came out, I went to a friends house with a bunch of friends and thats all we did was take turns playing 4 player deathmatches in Halo.

Phooey. I thought this thread was about World of Warcraft. Well, THE iDOLM@STER was quite an unexpected and pleasant surprise for me.

The 1000 enemy boss battle in Kingdom Hearts 2.
I have never seen that before in a Squaresoft PS2 game.

I have to agree with you on the 1000 enemy boss battle too.
Another wow moment was in halflife two, Getting chased with no HEV, weapons or anything across the rooftops by combine, and more importantly the striders

Ugh-Zan from the first Serious Sam game.
Giygas, after Pokey turns off the Devil's Machine.
Entering an Oblivion portal for the first time was crazy. I've never seen such a convincing portrayal of a Hell-type world in a video game. Not even Diablo or Doom 2 comes close.
My first encounter with ragdoll physics in Dead Man's Hand for the PC. Shooting the hats off people, crushing them with wooden awnings, or even pushing a cart full of gunpowder down a hill and detonating it with a well-placed shotgun round, not only killing all who are near, but launching the wagon wheels off in random directions, potentially killing anybody that happens to be in the line of fire.

In Deus EX when I noticed the suspicious maintenance guy in the helipad, proceeded to gun him down, subsequently warning Jock who reports that there's a bomb on helicopter..ultimately saving his life...that was pretty wow I mean the whole game was so wow with all it's subtle things that can change.
The entire last level and ending of Sonic 2 is far more satisfying then any ending for almost any game ever..battling it out in a space station with no life/mistakes and returning to *their planet* was another wow moment.

Seeing the camera pull back in FF7 to reveal Midgar for the first time was my definitive "wow" moment.

I have to agree that Half-Life 2 needs to be on the list. My favorite moment is when you see all of the rebels take down a strider while you are on top of a building. If you have a good sound system on your PC you get the thundering explosions rocking your room and it gives the game such an epic feel.
I have to also add my first wow experience, too. Ever since I was born we had an NES and I played it all the time. When we got the Genesis, however, I just about crapped my pants! Green Hill Zone in the original Sonic the Hedgehog was unlike any other game to me. I saw the 16-bit glory with the bright colors and rotating flowers. The music just blew me away, as well. I'll never forget my first glimpse of that game...

When I saw Altered Beast on my friend's Genny in 1989... it blew me away. It just seemed 10x better than anything possible on the NES. Also, I remember feeling the same way about TF III

The first wow moment for me that was truly something special was the big run in level 2 of Strider for the Genesis. I couldn't believe I was playing something so "arcade-perfect" at home, and that remains the most exhilarating moment in Strider. It still gets me to this day. Seeing the parallax orgy that is the Green Hill Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog for the first time was also quite mind blowing.
Another great moment for me way playing Daytona USA in the arcade for the first time. I remember reading about it in GameFan, and then finally seeing it in the summer at the seashore in an arcade on the boardwalk. I am still waiting for a perfect conversion of that one to come home. The DC version got close, and was actually a much better looking game, but the control was off a bit. I want to see something as great as the Sega Rally 1995 bonus disc that came with the first print of the abysmal Sega Rally 2006 in the PS2. That port is butter.
My final contrbution is my most recent experience: Playing Okami for the first time. The "flow" of the graphics captures living watercolor in a way that needs to be seen to be believed. The fact that the entire screen has a texture applied that looks like rough paper is a great touch. One of, if not the best looking PS2 game.
