Another wow moment for me was when I started and finished Killer 7. That whole game was just one big wow moment.

A few Wow! Moments in[relatively] recent memory: 32/128 Bit- Okami when you first revive a cursed zone and see an area springing to life. Skies of Arcadia- arriving at the Temple of Pyrynn with the red moon crystal and seeing it's size and scope was inspiring, as was finally getting the Delphinus. Xenogears had a couple great moments- Most of them invovlng Id and his 19999 damage strike as well as when he attacks you on the bridge (Seeing that red gear drop in was really after remembering said damage, really disconcerting), though when the plot fell into place, it hit hard. A final note goes to Mega Man X5 for the first end stage- combining the two most evil things ever from the first two games- the Quick Man beams and the Rock Monster/Devil from the first game.
Phantasy Star IV blew me away when you got to go to the Air Castle from PS 1, and though it was suspected from the moment you arrived, fighting Lassic/La Shiec there made me a very happy PS fan. Phantasy Star II's ending is still one of the best RPG endings ever and might have taken me back more than another "Wow" moment yet- more than that, play it for yourself. Getting past Air Fortress and to the Death Egg Zone in Sonic 2 was also quite amazing at the time.
For the 8 bit era, only a few things come to mind- having the Mask Gate in Super Mario Bros. 2 attack in the last stage really caught me off guard and was a rather nice touch.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Metal Gear Solid yet. Every boss battle is a big "WHOA" moment, my personal favorites being the melee fight against the Ninja in the computer office and the ever-so-infamous Psycho Mantis battle. I think I laughed my ass off when he blanked out the screen and caused "HIDEO" to appear. That is one of THE greatest breakings-of-the-fourth wall in all of video gamage. ;D I'd have to say that Gitaroo Man also has many a great moment, with levels 3 and 7 being my personal faves. The former is just so jazzy and gets me to groovin' just about every time, and the latter is just freaking insane and intense. I describe it as "techno-stomp on crack with a hint of Latin flavor". And when I first played Elite Beat Agents on Hard Rock difficulty? I damn near shit myself, as the markers were popping up with almost no warning whatsoever, AND they were smaller to boot! I never thought I'd beat all the levels, but... well, I got used to the shock eventually. But every level was just intense. Hmmmmmmmm... I'd say that Einhander had itself some great battles, a favorite being the one at the end of Level 3, with the entire room tilting to the boss's advantage. I also like the midboss of level 5, jumping around like an ape and booting large boxes at you. A real fucking pain for me to beat, though. Oh, and of course, level 6's boss is just nuts, not to mention having the coolest freaking music in the game. I've got a classic: The very first appearance of Akuma in Super SF2 Turbo warping in and completely obliterating Bison with his infamous Shun Goku Satsu. It's like everyone thought, "WHAT THE FUCK?!? If this guy can obliterate Bison without any effort, what does that say about his power..." it said that Akuma would rape the player's ass a thousand times over before they even come close to KOing him. Oh, and Hotel Dusk had many a moment that made me legitimately gasp. That game is just loaded with lemon twists and sharp turns. I think that's all I've to share for now... Wait, I lied. Just two words: SEVEN FORCE. And the Dice Palace. And the return of all bosses without being at all rehashes in the final level And... well, just about the entirety of Gunstar Heroes. ;D

I've had many wow moments, but I can't remember any. Well, except for that one nuclear explosion I saw in...Red Alert I think...It didn't look pretty then, but the sheer size and magnitude of the explosion was really something. Quite some time after that I got StarCraft, and that one couldn't nuclearly explode for jack, I mean, the mushroom only covers something like four building squares.

The first wow moment for me that was truly something special was the big run in level 2 of Strider for the Genesis. I couldn't believe I was playing something so "arcade-perfect" at home, and that remains the most exhilarating moment in Strider. It still gets me to this day. Seeing the parallax orgy that is the Green Hill Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog for the first time was also quite mind blowing. YES! How could I forget to mention Sonic? That game was mind-blowing back in the day. Also, I'd give props to Doom (1993). It was one of those sensations you HAD to play back in the day to "fully get." SF II SNES was also a big WOW moment.

Seeing Sonic2 for the first time at my grandmothers house when all I'd played before was NES games, such nostalgia I remeber I was so little I didn't know how to plug Genny in and my Grandmother had to do it for me. Sonic 2 got me into games in general.
Also watching Rochet Knight Adventures foor the first time was a major wow I was so jealous of the kid who owned it. The first time I say sparkster rocket boost was incredible. The first time I played it I didn't even know he could rocket boost and when my freind showed I was amazed.
Seeing Time Crisis at funspot when I was kid was so awesome even though I wasn't tall enough to play it but I'd watch my chaperon play it. Before I knew about what good acting was like I saw a few of the cutscenes and thought they were incredible, like when richrad punches the guy with the claw, and when Gado pulls out the knives and says"Let me entertain you" and when Wild Dog takes Rachel with him and hearing him say "you killed my boss" that I found quite interesting at the time considering it wasn't the main badguy yet he continues to fight.
I remeber on christmas eve one night I found out my parent's got me and my sister a N64 and I could only imagine what the games were like. I had to try to sleep through hearing my parents pluging it in and then proceeding to play Mario 64. I listened to the bomb guys attack Mario all night till my parents went to bed and I went to sleep, and when I woke I was not disapointed the graphics were unlike anything I had scene before.
Mystical Ninja64 is another wow moment for me it was the first goofy Japanese game I'd ever played(not counting Mario and Sonic). I fell in love with it and it has been my all time favirit game ever sense.
My first manic shmup bullet hell I ever experienced was while playing Gunbird2 on Dreamcast which was a very quick and frightened wow. I always credit feeded back then but still beat it more then 10 times to see diffrent character endings and I still had just as much fun with as I do now.
I have had allot of wow moments in games thruout my life and I'll comment on some more later.
My most recent was also the Killer7 ending, words cannot describe how awesome that game was.

Thanks for reminding me of a few of my own wow moments:
The Playstation demo disc: It came with my Playstation, and had a pretty cool techno intro that showcased some major names, and the demos themselves didn't look to bad either. That disc sold me about three games: WipeOut 2097, Crash Bandicoot 3 (the first one was on the disc) and one other I can't remember. There were also two tech demos, both being model viewers with moving models of a Tyrannisaurus Rex and a Manta Ray. Final thing was the coolest feature: some impressive-looking visualizations you could use if you played music CDs on the Playstation. Overall I was very impressed by that disc.

There's too many wow moments for gameplay stuff than I can count. The last really big "Wow" moment I had from something graphical though was in 1999 when I saw a Sonic Adventure demo running on a Dreamcast kiosk in a mall. You might not think much of it now, but back in 1999 (near the end of the 32/64 bit generation) that shit was AMAZING! ....this is coming from a Nintendo guy too.

Then there was the first battle in Tales of Phantasia, which may not be that fluid compared to the later games, but I was still impressed by the whole idea of a Beat-'em-up/RPG.

Oooh...kal, good one on Deus Ex. I'm usually very, very late to the PC party, as I usually like to play games at full detail and no patching problems so I give myself 8-12 months before I pick a game up. As a result, my usual impression of a PC game is that it's pretty cool, but by then a lot of the wow factor wears off because of the march of progress. Deus Ex, though, was one I did get at release thanks to it using a rather dated even for its time Unreal Engine. Despite its initial teething problems, I was amazed by the open and flexible nature of the game.
One of the few moments where I was really amazed by the design of the game and not the graphics, which is the easy way to go.
Outrun on the arcades was amazing as well; it's what made me pick the SMS instead of the NES back in the day. As bad as the console was, I still had tons of fun with that one.

Another wow moment for me was getting my Dreamcast for Christmas and playing Shenmue, and being amazed at how real the game was, and the voice acting for me was a big thing because all the games I had previously owned were N64 games and the only one that had voice acting was Star Fox 64. Quite a big step for me in the gaming world, Shenmue is such an awesome game, I was also awe stricken at the music. And then going to to arcade, that game was the best.

I'm sure I've had plenty of "wow" moments, but, the one I can remember the best, for whatever reason, is the first time I took up town building in Dark Cloud.
I was pretty excited about the game, and, despite the delays, my anticipation level never dropped. When I first started playing, I went through the first dungeon and what not, and began rebuilding the town with water and buildings and trees, etc. When it was finally time to walk around the town and exit the Sim City-esque topdown view, I expected a lengthy load time; instead, I was very quickly zoomed in on my character in the middle of it all, and instantly surrounded by all of the items I had been moving just seconds before. As stupid as it sounds, at that point, all I could think was "Holy shit, this is next gen." and I had to do it a few more times before getting on with the game.

I can't belive no one has mentioned Super Metroid's last boss battle when Mother Brain is about to "kill"you and that baby Metroid you rescued in Metroid 2 comes in and rescues you.
Also that part when you enter the abandoned Brinstar and Tourian locations straight from the original Metroid.
