Here's an interesting question I have: What was the first JRPG, in which no matter how hard you try, you simply couldn't beat it in one sitting. Was it before Dragon Quest, or was DQ the first? Both NES Zeldas (technically action RPGS) can be beaten in one sitting.

One of these, I would imagine: www.hardcoregaming101.net/category/feature/dark-age-of-jrpgs/Dragon and Princess (PC-88, 1982) is the earliest JRPG listed in the usual databases. Assuming the release year is correct, it may be the first, though it's certainly possible that there's something obscure from earlier that hasn't crossed the language barrier yet (there are many undumped/unavailable games from this era)

Well, Dragon Quest (Warrior) got speed-ran as SGDQ last year, ending at something like 27 minutes through luck manipulation (as it's a really short game if you could take out the grinding )

I meant legitimately, and I take it Dragon and Princess used a password system, right?

Dragon Quest 1 and 2 originally used passwords as well (DQ3 was the first DQ designed with battery save), but I assume you consider using them to start the game the same as just loading a save file from a game with memory save.

There were a ton of 8-bit RPGs in the pre-Dragon Quest days that you couldn't possibly beat in one sitting. Xanadu immediately springs to mind, for example -- there's NO WAY IN HELL anyone could possibly beat Xanadu in one sitting. Playing that game is a PROJECT.

And Zeliard,Wibarm,Tritorn among others. Wibarm and Zeliard are both post-Dragon Quest (though Wibarm is only so by a few months).
