After Salt and Sanctuary transposed the Dark Souls style and experience from 3D to 2D, the "difficult nonlinear platformer set in a creepy oppressive medieval Church-like world" became almost a genre of its own, what with several titles like Unworthy, Dark Devotion, the fourth Momodora game and so on. Blasphemous is another example of this trend, a Spanish metroidvania inspired by the darker aspects of organized religion in that region, like those penitent guys who enjoy hurting themselves. Great graphic detail.
