The problem with getting a Japanese PS3 is that, while there's no region coding, the games will boot up in Japanese mode even if you get American versions. I don't know if you can change the language, but in cases like Resistance, you'll get a censored version, which more or less blows. Anyway, Last Hope really isn't too great. It looks and sounds fantastic, but it comes off as really amateurish, which makes sense considering it's a homebrew. It's tough as nails too - I can't beat the first boss, but then again, I didn't really play for too long. It REALLY bothers me that your orb is really selective as to what it will absorb/destroy and what it won't. Check out this amusing thread at the SHMUPS forum: shmups.system11.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6426&start=360It's basically: GAMERS: This game has flaws. DESIGNER: The problem is you or your TV, not the game. GAMERS: Insolence! And it continues like that for awhile. It's cool that the dev is reading comments but it's clear he's pretty arrogant about it. LOL, nice thread, I agree that the developer does sound a little arrogant. He definitely doesn't seem to like constructive critisism. I have to agree with you Kurt that it's not really that great of a game, even for a homebrew. While I do like my shooters somewhat difficult, this one is brutally unforgiving to the point where after having your ass handed to you enough times you're like, "ok, I'm done playing now". I am however, digging the music!

Yeah, I really want a Japanese PS2 for the PS2 and PSX shooters from Japan that I missed. I was actually thinking of buying a Japanese PS3 due to that ability plus the I can still play US Blue Ray (because of the the new region coding) and PS3 games (because of lack of region lockout) on it. I unfortunately don't have the money quite yet. I'd suggest a fully modded PS2, A new [modded] unit will only cost you $180 (less if you send yours in) and will allow you to play any game made for the hardware.

Modifying a Slimline PS2 is pretty easy nowadays, since it's pretty boot-disc friendly, and a quality boot disc isn't hard to find, along with the appropriate open-signal blockers.

Yeah I really want a copy of Border Down but the prices have been crazy on ebay. I don't think I'll get RSG as I believe it will be re-released sometime in the next few years. I don't know about Karous as Milestone left a pretty bad taste in my mouth after Chaos Field. I'm not a fan of that game. I got it for about $95 from a really nice seller on the shmups forum. I'd suggest going there to buy the game if you're thinking about it, as you're pretty much guaranteed the game will come in great condition and, even more important, you'll pay a fair price for it. I really, really like it, though - a wonderful soundtrack and tons of replay value because of the multiple courses equal one awesome game. Plus, unlike a lot of shooters in the vein of Battle Garegga and such, the scoring is not quite complicated and obtuse. Hell, if I can figure out the jist of it, it's not too bad. Now scoring well is another matter altogether. Definitely my favorite side scroller shmup of all time. Oh, and about Milestone, don't let Chaos Field turn you off from their other games! I got that game cheap and played some, and immediately didn't like it. Too many things to control, and not enough enemies to kill, as it's one huge boss rush, you know? But Radirgy greatly improved on it, though it wasn't without flaws either. It has that great flash-inspired style and a complicated, yet manageable gameplay system than Chaos Field. One thing I'm worried about in Karous is the same thing I didn't like in Radirgy, at least going by what I've seen of screenshots and videos. I didn't like the fact that you had to jump into enemy fire and start swiping, hoping that your invincibility won't run out, in order in increase the pills or whatever you had to collect. I'm not skilled enough nor patient enough to figure out how long that lasts, which made the game somewhat frustrating. Anyway, enough of amateur ranting; it was an improvement for me, and I expect similar improvements in Karous as well.

Where is there a good site to get my PS2 modded or buy a boot disc from? I still have my large PS2 launch system, astonishing as it seems, and I really want to just play imports. I'm not interested in copying games to a hard drive or playing bootlegs. What is out there for options and where can I find them?
PS- I think I may switch my order from Last Hope LE since it hasn't shipped yet and get something else from Play-Asia. I've checked around the net and found that a lot of people have the same opinion about the game. I don't really feel like paying $60 a game that people generally consider frustrating and feels like an unpolished game. It may look and sound nice but gameplay has always been what I look for in a game.
PPS- I just changed my order to a copy of Zero Gunner 2 for the DC. I heard that this is one of the great shooters for the DC and I can't wait to play it.

www.console24.com/They've got all sorts of kits, advanced soldering kits, non-solder kits, a card you can use to draw the CD drawer back out. I recommend that last one coupled with a set of boot discs.

I hope none of them is too much of a pain to use. It's a shame they don't have something as simple as a DC-X or Freeloader for the PS2.

The slide card you just put on the CD slider and pull it back out when the CD's started, and the other thing is just three rubber things you put in the CD area and forget they ever existed.
