Jade Cocoon for PSX and Jade Cocoon 2 for PS2 are pretty good monster battling games. There are also the later Arc the Lad games for the PSX that have competitive monster battling as well. The Shin Megami Tensei series also has monster battling so you may want to find some of them, too (especially Noctourne).
