Why is there a select button on every non-Sega-made controller? It has no use in nearly every game since the NES. Why, dear god, why!?

The answer is simple: so you can get an energy boost in Punch-Out!! if you hold it between rounds. I thought that was obvious...

Select is just a general purpose "Aww, did you run out of buttons? Here, have an extra one!" button. Microsoft tried to fix that by turning it into a generic "Back" button, but it's been relegated to the same purpose as the Select button by now.

So you can have an "Insert Coin" button your pad and not on the keyboard.
It's the taunt button.
It takes you to the codec screen.
It opens up the map.
If you press it simultaniously with Start, it takes you back to the title screen.
It opens the option screen.
It's a spare pause button.
It compliments the Start button well.

Nintendo 'invented' it, Sega was smart enough not to use it and Sony stole it

The select button also grew into the useless white and black buttons on the xbox controller as well. Geez, which genius thought it was smart to create buttons that were flush and unusable during gameplay anyway?

I thought white and black buttons were the equivalent of L2 and R2 just on the side. Or they could be the B and Z from Genesis 6 button controler..

Yeah, except it was just as useless as the select in terms of usability.

It's just one of those generic things, I'm with Shinigami here..it's more of a second start button..it's there because it can be and while it's not easy to press quickly it's useful for random little functions that start could do but it'd be more effort for the player.
Rather then Start - Map just press select.

I think the most useless button is the MODE button on the 6 button genesis controller.
I only used it for codes on the 32X version of DOOM.

Yeah, Mode had limited use--as far as I know it was only put there because some games have compatibility issues if you try to play them with a six-button controller and Mode somehow fixes that.

Now now, the select button allows you to cycle through Mega Man's powers! And, if you're feeling mischievous, you can hit it really fast to make "flamboyant rainbow" Mega Man.
