You probably mean Knight Lore by Ultimate Play The Game (now called Rare) released in 1984? It was the first of the "isometric adventure" genre and extensively copied by other publishers. They also made some other isometric adventures games such as Pentagram and Alien 8.

Never played that OR Batman, but if they're anything like Solstice, I should give 'em a shot. (:
And I still think Solstice qualifies as a 3D Metroidvania title, even if its perspective was lifted from another title altogether. It fits all the criteria: one huge, interconnected world, with areas that are inaccessible until you've gotten specific items or done specific things.

There's also Altered Space for the Game Boy.

Yeah, Altered Space for the GB and Equinox for the SNES. Made by the same guys who did Solstice. Both are also great games, though they qualify a bit less as Metroidvanias (Altered Space is level-based, and Equinox is set up with a world map and individual dungeons a la Zelda).

Dunno if it has been mentioned but... Aquaria for the PC! It's basically Metroid underwater. I wish the game comes to XBLA or something. Or maybe DS... the stylus would be perfect for this game.

I've played more LotS than I have Castlevania 2, but it seems pretty similar (minus the time of day shifting). I think the action is a little better, too.

There's Aquaria thread somewhere in this board, but I can't find it with ProBoard's stupid search engine. Anyway, the game seems to be really good. It got score of 92/100 from Pelit gaming magazine and "Pelit suosittelee" seal of recommendation: Here's a quick-translation of the box on lower-right corner:

I thought it was crap from what I played. Very dull to play and incredibly pretentious. I wouldn't reccomend it.

I strongly recommend it though. Cause frankly, it was quite awesome. So yeah, it's your word against mine omg!
