There is no way that anybody other than Rey was ever going to believe that was serious. What do you mean "anybody other than Rey"? What, am I some kind of idiot or something? Someone who hasn't played Pro Wrestling might think it's an actual fishman/merman from the Castlevania series by the way you said it. I'd rather have accurate information about each character instead of a joke that doesn't go anywhere.

Someone who hasn't played Pro Wrestling might think it's an actual fishman/merman from the Castlevania series by the way you said it. No they wouldn't. The way I said it couldn't possibly make it any more obvious that it's a joke. Honestly, it worked better in its original form. Over-explaining a joke (and/or removing every possible bit of subtlety from it) is kind of insulting to its audience's intelligence. How about we just forget about this and move on?

The part where the author goes on about those early round of Nintendo games as simple as their title themes made consider this would work better if all those were included in one big article as well. After all the author did point out a pattern of design similarities between those. As a whole they would make for a more interesting, more HG101-ish article. I was actually considering writing a piece about a few of those (though I have no idea what I'd call it). It would probably need to have Ice Hockey, Baseball, Soccer, and Tennis. The only problem would be whether or not to write about Golf, as that's part of the Mario Golf series.

It's a tricky topic, indeed. There are not related perse (that I can think of). Only thing in common is collectible related. They were the first released NES games by Nintendo. They share a simplistic design almost as if they were made by the same people. They sport an iconic starry black label with 8-bit art and eye catching impact themed, italized font.
Closest thing would be the SNK article about dodge ball, river city ransom and their many other games, and it's not even close.

To get back to the original topic, does anybody have a favorite character?
I would say anybody other than Kin Corn Karn.

My fave? Starman, that's for sure. Not only is he definitely the coolest wrestler (what with having all pink skin and no apparent eyeballs, which leads me to believe that he is some sort of extraterrestrial stronger than man), but he's honestly the ONLY one with which I can beat the game! Seriously, he has something other wrestlers don't: The Flying Cross Chop. Even though you take a bit of damage if you miss, if you practice with it enough, you will find that it is the only move in the game for which enemies are guaranteed suckers. Seriously, I just keep running around until they get into my line of sight, give them an FCC, get away, and keep repeating until I've whomped them like... twenty times. This is how I have reached and beaten the Great Puma, and it was quite an accomplishment.

fighter ino...er... hayabusa. that enzuigiri maybe hard to hit, but you gotta admit, by the time you do, they're staying down for the count

This article is pure awesomeness. It made me laugh pretty hard, thx! I was actually considering writing a piece about a few of those (though I have no idea what I'd call it). It would probably need to have Ice Hockey, Baseball, Soccer, and Tennis. The only problem would be whether or not to write about Golf, as that's part of the Mario Golf series. About Golf: I guess you're confusing NES Open Tournament Golf (aka Mario Open Golf in Japan) from 1991 with the original Golf from 1986? Anyway, if you're searching for an overaching title, why not group them together in an article called "NES Sports Series"? Afaik there are 12 titles: www.mobygames.com/game-group/nintendos-sports-seriesand you can identify them by the blue "Sports Series" logo on the front cover. Btw It's interesting to note that while ot having a blue logo on the front, NES Open Tournament Golf has a little red "Sports Series" logo on the back. If 12 games are too much, you could only focus on the games actually developed by Nintendo, which would narrow the list down to the following 7 titles and call the article "Nintendo Sports Series" or something. -Baseball -Tennis -Golf -Soccer -Pro Wrestling -Ice Hockey -Volleyball PS: Wii Sports is kinda like the perfect revival of this simple design aesthetic.

Personally I think the game alone makes for a weak article, but if combined as a whole like the previous poster suggests it becomes something more interesting. There's just not enough to say about this game.

I played the heck out of Pro Wrestling back in the day. If I'm remembering correctly I beat the game with every character, though some characters are definitely more fun than others. Anyway, a few thoughts:
- The US version by far has the suckiest artwork, as did all the early NES carts. I always wondered about the thinking behind this "pixelly representation of the game, but not at all what the game actually looks like" artwork style.
- Hadn't considered it previously, but King Slender could be Kerry Von Erich. Giant Panther looks like "Nature Boy" Ric Hogan. Kin Korn Karn could easily be Masashi Ozawa aka "Killer Khan" infamous in the WWF for his "Mongolian Mist" which came in green or even more deadly red varieties. But I am getting off track with my dumb wrestling history here.
- The manual lists GREAT PUMA as the VWF champion, and his portrait is a question mark. So, nobody knows what he looks like. Then how did he become champion? I always wondered about that.

Would you care telling me how to beat the game, then?
I always get my ass kicked around 5 or so matches into the title defense, when the AI decides it simply doesn't want to get thrown anymore :/

Hm, good question - though I did play "the heck out of" the game, that was about 25 years ago, and I haven't played it recently! From what I remember though, I did a lot of "diagonal walking" which would lead the opponent into my punches and kicks. With enough beating, they'd be more prone to fall victim to my moves such as suplex, biting, or whatever your character does. I think with the opponent beat down, you're also more likely to do the throw into the ropes and lariat (as opposed to being thrown). You can also try the route of winning by a count-out - which unlike in any type of US pro wrestling is a 20-count, and I believe you can win the title this way. Pretty shallow victory though! If I get the spare time to mess around with the game and remember anything, I'll come back with some updates.
