I am required to get a Commodore 64 emulator working for purposes of my 21st Century Pinball article - specifically, I'm trying to get this Pinball Dreams remake to work. Thing is, I haven't the slightest clue where to start. What's the best C64 emulator available, how do I run these things, etc?

Use winvice, it's pretty simple to run games. Just unzip the rom and then run it through the menu in the emu's gui.
A lot of c64 games were programmed to run at 50hz instead of 60. So unless your monitor or tv can support 50hz then a lot of games will have incredibly choppy scrolling.

on top of winvice i got ccs64 and hox64. couldn't say what's best. i hardly use computer emulation in comparison to consoles, but i gotta figure something out of those 3 should be good enough.

If the emulator you're using supports other palettes (I'm pretty sure vice does), I recommend using the "pepto" palette. It's offers the closest thing to real c64 colors: www.pepto.de/projects/colorvic/

I've been messing with WinVice and the only thing I've got out of my intended game was the 21st Century logo and introduction music. Waited five minutes and nothing happened - also tried turning on Warp Speed and waiting another five minutes; still nothing. Could use some assistance with this game.

I tried it out and got stuck too, usually you just have to hit space or swap your joystick ports over and press fire but that didn't work.

Strange...I tried the demo with CCS64 and I managed to load every part without problems.I suppose that the various loads still aren't linked together,so what you have to do is to directly load a table. That said,I really hope the project will be completed someday,Pinball Dreams is one of my favorite pinball sims.

I hated the Commodore emulator on the DS, you needed to input codes to get the games to run. For me, the Spectrum plays alot more convienantly.
