The beatmania article was submitted. Barring any editing or rewrite it should be good to go. I believe there are roughly 250 images to sort through, about the same file size in total as the planned mp3 pack.

I'd like to do a write up on Gall Force - Eternal Story, another Famicom Disk system game by Hal, it seem to share some of it's staff with Bam (T. Mukai at least).

I don't know if it has the same staff entirely, but there's 2 other Gall Force games on the MSX: One another HAL shmup, and the other a text adventure www.generation-msx.nl/msxdb/softwareinfo/733www.generation-msx.nl/msxdb/softwareinfo/918Not to mention mentioning the anime the games are based on.

Long time site reader here, but new forum member.
I've been pondering writing an article for some time, but I'm wondering: - are you all emailing Kurt before "reserving" games in this thread? What's the official way to pitch a topic? - how does one go about getting screenshots from portable games (especially with newer portables like the DS/3DS)?

I only emailed him for questions. -There are emulators that can run DS games, just make sure you set the options right. I personally haven't used one, but I've seen people use them and one (No$GBA, I think) defaults to a washed out unsaturated level). For 3DS, most pics here for those titles use watermark-free promo pics or take a picture of the screen. Check out Dead or Alive Dimensions here on HG 101 for examples.

At least for the DS I think it's through emulation (same goes for pretty much every other handheld system), whereas with the PSP there are two ways:
1) Using the TV-out cables (if you have a PSP-2000 or higher) and a capture card or
2) Using software for PC that allows you to see what the PSP's displaying by using the USB cable, although I think you need a CFW'd (modded) system for that.

There's at least one plugin for PSPs with modded CFW firmware that'll let you screencap ingame and store the BMP in a folder on your memory stick.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone.
I'm mostly interested in writing about portable (DS) RPGs. Obviously I don't want to play the entire game on an emulator (especially when I own it).
I'm thinking it would make sense to play the entire game on an actual handheld, and then later take an afternoon to play for 4/5 hours on an emulator to get some solid screenshots of multiple characters, overworld, dungeons, battles, etc. Of course a glaring downside would be the lack of endgame (or even mid-game) screenshots.
I suppose this is a problem unique to handheld RPGs. With a shmup or action game I would just play it twice: once on an actual console and then once on an emulator.

It's complicated (and it doesn't work 100% of the time, plus it requires that you have a R4 or similar flash cart) but there is a way to transfer saves from DS carts to your computer through use with an emulator. There are also devices that specifically let you to do it. But, it is a pain.
Depending on the game, you might be able to find save games at either GameFAQs or the GBATemp forums. Converting them to work with emulators can also be a pain but is usually doable.
For RPGs (what I did with the Shadow Hearts games) is get screenshots from the first hour or so, then download a save game from GameFAQs, and get some late game shots. Plus, with RPGs you usually backtrack a bit, so you can get screens of stuff from earlier on, even if you're missing event and storyline scenes. DS emulation also lets you frameskip to speed up the game.
Oh, and welcome! Just let me know which games you're writing about, to make sure it's not stepping on anything else. I do keep tabs on this thread so you can post here.
Oh, and use Desmume for DS games. It's easily the better of the two compared to NO$GBA, for the frameskip, more accurate palette, and screenshotting functionality. Only use NO$ if you run into compatability issues.

Thanks, I actually remembered that saved games are on GameFAQs while I was lying in bed last night. I considered editing my post but would have woken the wife in the process haha. I'd like to write about Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled, a Western "JRPG" originally conceived for the GBA but eventually ported to the DS. It's a great obscure game and one of the most "retro" titles on the DS (in terms of style, not release date of course). There's woefully little information about it currently on the 'net, and most "professional" articles/reviews simply bemoan that fact that it still has random battles and isn't as good as Chono Trigger. Doesn't look like anyone's reserved this yet. I've read a good chunk of this thread and found nothing about it.

Ah right, I remember picking that up about a year or two ago. Pretty, but the combat and such was SO SLOW. I seem remember hearing varying opinions about whether it got better or worse...I think on Gamespite?
Anyway, it'd be cool article. The developers should still be around on the 'net, if you want me to try to track them down for an interview. The main text should be done first, though.

www.studioarchcraft.com/Here's the developer's homepage. They announced work on another game in 2010, but it seems like the page hasn't been updated since, and it looks kinda broken...

Just to mention: I'm working on covering the Space Station Silicon Valley series on N64, PS1 and GBC.
Fun fact: the PS1 port is one of the worst ports I have ever seen (playing on hardware, not emulator). Almost as bad as those old arcade to 8-bit computer ports. It actually ADDS more glitches than the N64 original!

I noticed that there's no article on Bad Dudes vs. Dragonninja. I'm working to rectify that and also talk about its pseudo-sequel Two Crude Dudes/Crude Buster.
Just to ask, are any of the computer ports missing stages?

I wanna cover the PC (soon to be released on the DS) Doujin fighter, Yatagarasu. I'll probably veer a bit off track, and cover the artist/developers and their previous work, aswell (some of which has been covered here, already).
