Cool article. I think another good article would be one that deals with Nintendo's "forgotten" game series and characters. Stuff like I dunno, Tinstar and Uniracers and stuff.

Tinstar was good, but it was painfully boring at some points.

I just realized something...
From StarTropics article: "Although both Startropics games were made by Japanese teams, they were only released in America."
Actually the first Startropics game was also released in Europe (Wikipedia). The first game was even advertised on cereal packages in Europe. The reviewer must be American, hehe,

Oops, that was probably me. I meant to say something of the effect of "never released in Japan". I reworded it now. Thanks for the heads-up!

Just caught this typo:
"The graphics are descent enough during the underworld scenes"
Should be "decent".

Currently playing through Startropics now on an actual NES. It's tough going in places! The atmosphere reminds me of the Goonies movie though. A kid on an adventure, with a bit of a nautical theme in places.
The article says it gets wretched in later chapters though. Still on Chapter 3 and I've had to restart countless times already... For all the flak Snake's Revenge gets, it's considerably easier than a lot of other NES games.

The StarTropics games are pretty brutal. It's kind of a nice change of pace, though, considering adventures games in the style of Zelda usually are fairly easy. But even though the challenge increases as the game goes along, I had an easier time of it in the later chapters because I had adapted to the game well by then. I think Chapter 3 was a big sticking point for me too since the difficulty goes up from the prior two but I still wasn't fully comfortable with the strange control scheme just yet.

I still can hum the theme to the first dungeon on command.
Do do do do do, do do, do, DO do...
I played Startropics as a kid, and figured almost everything out myself(including that stupid water + book code), so it's near and dear to me. I even have a boxed copy.

This OCRemix of the theme has been kicking around my hard drive for years. Currently playing through Startropics now on an actual NES. It's tough going in places! Man, that thing's murder.

I've just reached the ghost tunnel... I meant the prior dungeon, with the fire boss and skeletal ostriches. I'd die, and be knocked from 6 hearts down to 3, and the ostrich enemies would take half of those. So I'd have to reach the boss with only 2 hearts. I eventually found the secret jar of juice to heal me, but some of the later rooms, filled with enemies and platforms, could drain you pretty fast. It didn't help that I died a few times on the boss, not realising I can't actually kill him the traditional way. Had to watch a Youtube vid for that - though I am determined not to use a FAQ.
The jumping in the dark puzzle was genius - very satisfying to work out on your own. The snake enemies show you which pathway is nearest for you to jump onto, while the little squid guy shows you there are only three blocks adjacent him. If you took the time to observe your surroundings, being in the dark wasn't a problem.
I had a quick go on the ghost tunnel, but didn't take it seriously. Invisible enemies seem like they could get annoying.

The second game seems like it's considerably easier.
I mean hell, I actually managed to beat that one (even though the end part was a bit brutal for me), and I'm terrible at video games by and large.
I was never able to get all that far in the first one, naturally. I planned on trying to do a real playthrough on VC, but as usual, I got distracted, and then got distracted from the distraction, and so on.
