I bought this because I felt bad for Aksys. I hasn't gotten bad reviews, persay, but the fighting game community seems to have nothing but apathy towards this one. Which is sad, because it's better than most non-doujin fighters I've played over the past few years. www.hardcoregaming101.net/battlefantasia/battlefantasia.htmThe opening kinda rambles a bit, I guess. I think I want to do articles on Star Gladiator and Street Fighter EX just to put Street Fighter IV in perspective, but that's something for a different day.

I immediately dived into reading this one because I'm interested in this game a lot.

So, barring the language factor and achievement junk, any reason to own 1 home port over the other?

PS3 has a better pad, but you can still mod the 360 pad. The general consensus seems to be that the 360 one has better online play, but I haven't tested that myself. Otherwise, pretty much identical.

I think the main reason this game failed could be that people would expect a game with that design to be an RPG.

This game has shitty PS2 graphics but manages to convince you it's gorgeous. It screws with my mind I tells ya! :0
Only have the demo though. It was enough to convince me to buy it "cheap," which turns out is practically impossible to do with a PS3 game.
I was gonna buy one of those uber craptastisch Compile Heart SRPGs but they all go for over £30 on eBay. That's when I decided to calm the fuck down, utilize my back compatibility (*winces*), and buy Grandia, Vagrant Story et all for mere pounds.
Chuffed I was.

Windows should be added as a platform because the game received a Steam release. Not the only late port by ArcSys lately, since Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Whateverelse was released a few weeks before, but at least older iterations of it had received PC ports years ago, this one was really unexpected. As often happens with console ports, the setup of PC specific options is external to the game itself; the only graphical options are resolution (up until 1920x1080) and fullscreen/window but at least keyboard is fully configurable _and_ the configured inputs are used also when navigating in-game menus - one thing I hated in other fighting games is how your inputs would work only during fights and you have to use some awkwards keys to navigate menus. At least, given the age of the game, system requirements are really low, so it's one of those ports that are not exceptional but also not an insult to the PC player.
As for the game itself, I must agree with the article: it may be considered a "tier B" compared to other titles of the genre, the visuals are PS2-level and Odile is a cheaply made character. There are also bits of "typical" Japanese dialogue - Coyori is constantly embarassed about her panties showing easily but never thinks a moment about getting a longer dress - that can get irritating. But it's also very easy and fun to play, and the art direction makes it pleasant to look at.

I'm quite ignorant on fighters so I appreciate how the article puts the game into context. Pretty interesting read, as I had no idea this game even existed. Some nitpicks:
"If you hold Forward and counter, you'll execute a "Gachi Drive", which will send them flying across the screen, opening up a potential for a juggle combo." There's no noun that the "them" in "send them flying" is technically referring to, it perhaps could be "send the opponent flying".
"The visuals carry a storybook fantasy style quality, without somewhat muted colors." Should probably be "with somewhat muted colors"?
"The character portraits are drawn somewhat sketchily and it's a little awkward to see them animated during the story cutscenes, because they're basically still drawing with mouth movements and other adjustments to make them look like they're breathing." Should this be "still drawings"?

I should note - this game was actually ported to Steam recently! I should've picked it up in the last sale but I forgot. I've been meaning to replay it, if only to get better quality screens (these are SD quality taken with an S-Video capture card).

Last I tested the Steam version was quite poor, with no options to remap buttons or to change resolution. Don't know if those were fixed.

As I wrote above, they are in an external setup program.
