www.hardcoregaming101.net/cotton/cotton.htmA bunch of people requested this one so...here it is! It sucks that the best games are Cotton 2/Boomerang, they're barely playable on MAME and I can't get the Saturn emulator working at a decent clip either. Grabbing screens for both was painful, but it still looks nicer than an s-video input. Neither are cheap either, if you're going to get the Saturn games. Also, the level 4 theme from the TG16 Cotton sounds a lot like a Mega Man X4 song I can't quite put my finger on.

I read the article, and it looked good, sad about it not working on mame though.

I remember playing the SNES version on a rom. I had just grabbed a whole bunch of them from my cousin's computer and started to try them out. THen I say one titles "Cotton 100%" and I wondered, "what the hell kind of game could this be?" I certainly didn't expect it to be a shump though.

It's games like this that make me LOVE my Saturn. Although it really is akin to a relentless parasite that latches on to your wallet and never lets go.

Tell me about it.
Lately I've had a hankering to get Final Fight Revenge, which I still haven't played. I know it's supposedly awful, but...the curiousity will get the better of me. Too bad it's at least $100 everywhere I see it.

Ya know, I really wanna play Cotton on MAME... but the latest version (0.104) that I have has the System 16 driver currently busted. Nice update, MAME team.

I don't know if whoever worked on the article already knows, but Cotton is a playable character in the Atlus strategy RPG Rondo of Swords. Hope I'm not breaking any rules with this brief statement here.

Neat! You don't happen to have any pics, do you?
Generally I'd prefer if you were to dig up the original topic for the Cotton article and post there, but since the search/sort function of this forum is weird, I don't mind new topics being started.

A quick Google search turned up this blog on Destructoid, which has a character portrait of Cotton from the game in it. Actual screenshots of her would probably be tougher to track down...

In the Genesis game Panorama Cotton, if you beat the game and get 1 million points or more, you'll be able to play as Silk (the little fairy) and Cotton will be your companion. The message you get after achieving 1 million points is (according to Gamefaqs): "Silk, the one who's always being bossed around, is having a dream... It's time for something-is-wrong Mode! Go! (Continue)." This mode is exactly the same as the normal game, but you do get a joke ending message after beating the game with Silk at least.

I played through the arcade version of Cotton again in MAME to refresh my memory, then hit up Cotton Original in pSX. The article says they're exactly the same, but Original actually changes the game a bit. 1. Boss and enemy HP has been reduced. 2. The patterns of many of the bosses are different. 3. While the basic sprites are mostly the same, there are lots of extra visual flourishes. I noticed... * Fancier explosions. * Particle effects when using thunder magic. * Afterimages when launching fairies. * The Death Jr. -esque enemies are flickering and spectral. * The portal behind the first boss glows and changes colors. * The final boss has more animation and a more elaborate teleportation effect. * The landscape you see after beating her has been redrawn with more detail. 4. There are a few added sound effects, such as a roar when you use dragon magic. 5. The music sounds somewhat different. It's probably sequenced, rather than recorded. 6. You're limited to 9 credits a game, but are no longer sent back to the start of a stage if you continue more than once during it. Also, when you set the difficulty to "hard" in Cotton Original, enemies release tons of brightly-colored suicide bullets, as do bosses during certain attacks. To compensate, you have a smaller hitbox and a higher rate of fire. Feels very proto-Deathsmiles. Finally, there's a translation patch for the disc image. It's mainly for the story scenes, since the menus are already in English. All in all, I think the arcade version's better, though Cotton Original isn't a bad port.

Thanks for this, BTW. We tend to revise articles in cycles, so whenever we get around to revamping the Cotton article, these will be added.
