I'd like to get my old playstation games running on my computer- I have a PSX and original discs, but I'd kind of like to play them with some of the bells and whistles that emulaton offers, such as fast-forward and save states.
The difficulty: I have a Mac laptop, running OS X. I've tried playstation emulators before, and the probelm is that my laptop doesn't seem willing to let me use CDs it doesn't recognize at all- I'll put in a PSX CD, it'll spin for 30-40 secs, and then automatically eject without the OS acknowledging it's there (I get the same problem when I try to boot it on my Boot Camp partition running windows). Am I out of luck?

I never touched a Mac since like, 8th grade, but the 2 best emulators out there are ePSXe and pSX emu.
I prefer ePSXe though. The BIOS and plugins are easy to find too.

I recall Connectix Virtual Game Station being for the Mac originally, but that was likely back in the OS 8/OS 9 days, and it was a commercial emulator...

The MacOSX port of PCSX is about as good as you're going to get, but it's woefully out of date and, compared to modern PS1 emulators on PC (such as Xebra, ePSXe and pSX Emulator), its compatibility is pretty "meh". Maybe running pSX Emulator, Xebra or ePSXe through some sort of virtualization layer (Crossover Mac, Parallels, whatever) is a better solution, assuming you're using an intel-based Mac (which it sure sounds like, considering you mentioned bootcamp and all). Still, that doesn't totally resolve your problems with the CDs. You can try alternate CD-ROM plugins (like Pete's) though with pSX Emulator I've had great luck with just throwing in a game and being able to play it (oh hey, it doesn't use plugins, either!). If all else fails, just rip a disc image and load it straight into the emulator. Then you get to enjoy the other awesome convenience of emulation: being able to swap between games withing having to fish out the discs.

What happened to SSSPSX? I thought that was superior to ePSXe as far as plugin-based emulators went. Of course, there's no Mac OS port of that one either.

I believe the author went on to spend some time working on PCSX2, which is kind of a shame for PS1 emulation because SSSPSX was the heat. ePSXe 1.7.0 really leapfrogged it and rendered it obsolete, unfortunately (other than that super neat and handy list of recent games played in SSSPSX). But hey, it's good for PS2 emulation at least!

I say rip it as an ISO on someone else's computer... or look for the iso online... try isohunt.com... or maybe demonoid if you've got an account there.

The difficulty: I have a Mac laptop, running OS X. That's your problem right there. You need a real PC for anything gaming.
