Late night posting, because I'm not sure what else to add to this: hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/dragonspirit/dragonspirit.htmAfter the Dragon Buster bit, I wanted to look into Namco's other "Dragon" series. For the longest time, I got these two games totally confused with each other, for whatever reasons. Dragon Spirit is cool, but it's ridiculously hard. The NES port rocks, at least. Dragon Saber is better on all fronts, but was barely ported anywhere. How odd. EDIT: Oh yeah, haven't ripped the MP3s yet, so the links go nowhere.

Heck yes!!!!!
BTW, did you find out what are the conditions for the girls you rescue in the NES version to appear as a shadow or not? I never noticed that until recently and apparently no one knows what triggers it exactly.
I also found kind of neat that the Arcade version of Dragon Spirit features a complete listing of all Namco games up to that point during the ending.
I don't recall any other Namco game doing that.

Just thought I'd mention as a point of interest that Dragon Spirit was also one of the featured games in Namco Super Wars. In fact, it was one of the five main franchises the plot was focused around.

This series is pretty slick- some of my favorite NES shooters, actually.
Are the 'story pictures' for Dragon Spirit in order? They don't look like it...

Nothing like breaking ones' fingers playing these games.
You should mention the stereo sound in the arcade cabinet.

Hmm, you wouldn't mind hooking me up with that ROM, would you? None of the sites have it for some reason...and I wouldn't mind updating Namco x Capcom with it either. As for the girls - I'm not sure! Some of them were shadows, and I assumed that was what they looked like, but then they showed up OK in the ending.

Yeah, sometimes they show as a shadow after you rescue them and sometimes they do not. I have no idea what the conditions are.

Another awesome game covered as of late. I love Dragon Spirit to pieces. :) I'd go so far as to call it my favorite shooter, and it always perplexes me how it seems to go relatively unknown, or at least unloved, in shooter crowds. I always try to spread the word on it, though.
I could never really get into the original arcade version; the NES version just plays so much better. I adore the Shinji Hosoe soundtrack in any form, and the level designs are just so creative. Each one has its own distinct style, and not just visually.
Even with my regular playthroughs, I've never been able to determine a consistent pattern to get the girls to show up. I've always wondered about it too.
I've still barely touched Dragon Saber. I need to remedy that someday.
Oh, and I actually made the NES white dragon out of Lego bricks about a year ago. :) I didn't bother to keep it together, but it's a simple matter of following my print out if I ever want to do it again.
And for something you may want to add to the article: From what I remember, Namco did a half-assed attempt at making the NES game seem like a sequel to the arcade game, even though it was essentially a port. That's where "The New Legend" comes from. Supposedly, you're playing as the son of the arcade's character.
