NES Athena seems to have been done by the same company that did NES Ghosts 'n Goblins, Ikari Warriors, and Super Pitfall (Micronics).

Anybody have some Psycho Solider screenies that show Kensou? I'm curious about how he looked in his original game.
Also, that Athena Mobile Phone game (The sequel, not the singer one) looks pretty awesome, though I've given up on playing arcade games on my mobile. It's just no fun >.<

Yeah I'll definitely stick one or two up later. There's a portrait of him on the high score screen (looks more like a chibi Rambo) and he shreds on a guitar in the ending concert.

I could get a larger pic from KoF 2000 if you want. Sorry for the low size, I should've gotten it filtered to 2X size.

Ah, excellent article, beyond the call of duty on the research, although it's wrong in that the NES game *does* have multiple paths.
I've always kind of liked the original Athena. The block-breaking, item-finding vibe is obviously lifted from Super Mario Bros, and if you open the right blocks the game becomes considerably easier. It doesn't quite make up for its flaws, but there is a kind of Bubble Bobble-like aspect with the wide variety of objects to find.
I have actually finished the NES port of this game, and the win condition is absurdly difficult, requiring that the player find a secret level, obtain a well-hidden item in that level, then find the secret way OUT of the level, before the final boss is beatable. I suspect the arcade version works that way as well.

The thing that seems weird to me is how the Psycho Soldier and KoF Athena seems to be practically different from the one in the old run-and-bop arcade game. Maybe they just happen to share the same name and a similar character design?
That cell phone game looks like it could actually be good, like the original but perhaps with its many problems fixed. Of course, we'll never see it in the states, as the emphasis on girly pin-up art, pastel environments and vaguely lesbo story (http://game.snkplaymore.co.jp/mobile/i-mode/special/athena_manual/page7.html) mark it indelibly as a product of Japan.

You know, it's interesting the article doesn't mention that SNK's Athena is just a rip from Saint Seiya's Athena. It's just about as obvious as Mr. You Know Who from KOF02.
