Well, I have Blood working reasonably well, but now I'm having promblems with Lucasarts' immortal adventure title, Grim Fandango. The game itself somehow runs very well for a bit, until arbitrary points where the sound either skips or dies out entirely. Then, when Manny is supposed to say something, the game sort of suspends itself indefinitely, waiting for something to be said that never gets said.
Hence, I ask for help on this! Can anyone suggest any sort of troubleshooting on it?

Sounds like another IRQ issue.

Never heard of this type of sound problems. Anyway, did you try the fan patch and installer? It solved all the problems I had with the game under XP (including a point, late in the game, where it always crashed), and also allowed for playing in a window and full hard disk install.

I had no idea there was a fan patch for the game. That sounds like it will help on a good load of problems. Where might I be able to obtain the patch?

Running this game on anything but an old machine can be a pain in the ass. If the patches didn't solve your problem, try looking in to the executable file's properties and running the game as a Windows 95 program. If your system and os permit.

www16.brinkster.com/salvage/thief/darkengine.htmNot sure if you've tried this already or if your problem even has anything to do with this, but I do know that I had problems with the System Shock 2 demo constantly freezing on me before I could even try a decent chunk of it out, but then came across the above link somewhere, took its advice and turned off one of the cpus, and then it ran perfectly. Hmmm, starting to think it'd be a good idea to have a whole thread devoted to running older games on new PCs in general, since it IS a highly prevalent problem. I myself plan on getting a bunch of old PC games that I missed out on back in the day, and I imagine will run into many troubles along the way myself, especially since I'm not exactly the most computer-savvy person out there.

Alrighty, BUMPing this to lamentably mention that the GF patched launcher given in Gendo's link does not work for me. When I use the launcher, the game crashes on the screen, spouting some bullshit that I do not understand at all. A box titled "Assert Handler" pops up and it says this:
Res.c(2075): (int)fh > 0 && (int)fh <= MAX_OPEN_FILES
Once again, an error pops up and gives me a bunch of fucking jargon instead of telling me anything I can understand. *sigh* If anyone can offer any help, I'd be grateful for sure.

Try the install to hard drive option. It just worked for me.

Try the install to hard drive option. It just worked for me. Sounds like a plan, but I'm not quite sure how I would access that. Can you explain the process?

When you download the launcher from Gendo's link there is an option button on the bottom. Click it there are two options: Close Launcher on Play and Install to Hard Drive. Make sure you have both discs. Install to hard drive option changes to Run Grim from Hard Drive. Make sure this has a green check next to it not a stop sign thingy. Click it to change it if it is wrong.
I was getting the same error as you on Vista and I just watched through the opening.

Thanks, man! When I'm less occupied, I'll give it a shot. ADD: It seems to work very well now! Thanks to Gendo and Susan! ^_^

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFCrap crap crap. I've actually attempted to play GF in earnest, and I'm afraid the launcher only helps things temporarily. After playing for ten minutes or so, the goddamn sound still inevitably crashes and the game refuses to progress due to the sound being fucked up. Goddammit. I refuse to give up, though. I MUST play through Grim Fandango, stupid crappy Vista or no. I will take any and all suggestions, no matter how ridiculous they may sound. (On a side note, I know I haven't been on for a while. I have nothing else to offer besides forum burnout. It happens, you know?)

This has been happening to me too. It also seems to go out randomly when in the main menu and FFFFFFFFUCK. I haven't been able to play it very well yet... But Sotenga if you really really will try anything, why not slap Ubuntu on a thumbdrive or something and try emulating it through WINE? EDIT: ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=108165good place to start.
