www.youtube.com/watch?v=GumIlPK5hLMThis is Elysian Tail: Dust, a game in development for XLA animated by the guy who animated the Jazz Jackrabbit games. It is also drop dead GORGEOUS. Also, Art of Fighting 3: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjbKwh3mU-YThis is probably the best looking SNK game since KOFXII. Big sprites with smooth animation, not to mention some awesome backgrounds. So, what do you think the prettiest 2D game is?

Odin Sphere is hard to beat. On handhelds, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia is also great looking!

There's also Mark of the Wolves, that one Fatal Fury game. It was beautifully done and still has something of a following.
Of course I'm going to go the cheap and easy route and just say Odin Sphere, even though it used a lot of 3D effects (especially with the dragons flying in.) The game was also a 10-year labor of love by the developers.
Symphony of the Night also has to get a mention.

Odin Sphere is hard to beat. On handhelds, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia is also great looking! Odin Sphere does look pretty good, but I think the ridiculously excessive use of segmented sprites in favour of actual, hand-drawn animation really detracted from how good it could have looked. As for this "Dust" game, color me really damn interested. The whole Elysian Tail universe actually looks really appealing.

Cave's side-scrolling shmup DeathSmiles looks pretty damn sweet. Too bad we'll never see it in America.

For me it'd also be Odin Sphere, not only do I love the art style, especially color-wise, but I think it looks fantastic in motion.
Also Gradius Gaiden is freakin gorgeous.

Odin Sphere is beautiful, but it has some serious slowdown.
Prinny has some nice production values.
Personally, Last Blade 2 is my favorite. I love how alive the backgrounds are.

3rd Strike will probably go unbeaten for best looking in-game 2D animation.

I'll go with a obligatory mention of the Street Fighter III series.
Also, Super Robot Wars W and K on the DS makes you wonder how they pulled such amazing 2D for the battle scenes.

Cave Story is beautiful in it's simplicity, also Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Super Metroid

Only when not in motion. The choppy animation frames, especially compared to games like Street Fighter III and Mark of the Wolves, really takes away from it. Blazblue looks a lot better in motion, as to be expected. King of Fighters XII also looks GORGEOUS in motion.

Muramasa is looking quite stunning so far, as good or even better than Odin Sphere.
