I've always wondered this (I do it too if I have the chance) how many of you usually pick the female character in a videogame? I mean, i do it in MMO's, I do it in singleplayer games, I did it in mass effect because I had the option to. (and even though I <3 rikimaru, I always pick ayane!)

I tend to do it, myself. It's kind of fun to be the laydeh.

I never pick the female character, given the option, as long as the sex of the character has no bearing on stats/abilities/etc.

I play female characters exclusively in MMOs. Other than that, I'll usually play a male character first in a story-driven game, then go back through as a female to see how it differs. Oh, and I chose a female for Rainbow Six Vegas 2, as well.

I don't care much. But I'm not as interested in playable characters as I am in bosses.

I play as males in single-player based games, but I play as just as many females (or maybe more) in fighting games.

Obviously I do, although it comes with the automatic side effect of "OMG UR A GURL" and "BE MY GIRLFRIEND" and people trying to do you/peek up your avatar's skirt. Usually telling them that I'm almost twice their age and they should go through puberty first before asking me keeps them at bay.
In console games, I get insane with character customization and try to base the hero off of me as much as I possibly can. Dragon Quest 3 is actually the best for this because of the gender and personality system. They look like me and make the same decisions I would and fight how I would.
If I can't be the hero but I have the option of making extra units in the game, I'm always a sword/attack/sweeper based unit, like the Ronin in Disgaea or a dual-wielding Knight in FF Tactics. Actually, this goes for MMOs and everything else too - I tend to go the sharp pointy knight route rather than the stereotypical girl mage/healer or girl archer route. Just give me a sword and shield and watch me work my magic that way.

Yeah, I hadn't thought about that, but I pretty much only play chicks in fighters, too. Sakura, Hitomi, Ling Xiaoyu, Pai...

Atma, I usually play a melee class, as well. In real life, I'd love to be able to use magic and all that crap, you know, mind over muscle. But in a game, I just can't stand the feeling of helplessness when you run out of MP. To that end, I'm usually a paladin or whatever the closest option might be. Melee + healing magic makes the time pass a lot more quickly.

I'm far too impatient to learn magic and far too stubborn and short-tempered to even attempt it, but I can channel those into pros instead of cons being a pure melee unit.

I don't have a particular preference towards gender when it comes to single player games, usually I just take whoever has the play style I like or the more appealing design, considering how so many games love to over sexify females characters I do tend to lean towards males slightly, I just don't like controlling someone that dresses like cheap trash, I'm looking at you Soul Calibur.
Besides, it bugs the crap out of me when someone is saving the world in their underwear... if you're going to attempt something that dangerous equip yourself accordingly!
When it comes to customization or MMOs I have a bunch of original characters from a silly story I've been on and off about writing over the years, creating whoever fits best with the options available.

I usually tend to play females as a priority. When I bought Saints Row 2, the very first thing I did was create a female avatar. I tend to find the female fighting game characters more interesting to play (i.e. Yuri Sakazaki, Elena, Vanessa), and whenever possible I try to break the gender stereotype by making my girl into a tank-type character or martial artist.
I still wait for the day that the Metal Gear series gets a female protagonist. Dammit, why can't we play as The Boss?!

In any game where I get to make the character I pretty well try to make my ultimate RPG hero: "Allen"/"Al" (and sometimes "Dan"). The names are so understated compared to others and I like that. Plus, I like it to be like me. Of course in games with many characters (fighting games, et cetera) I choose whoever best fits my style.

STRATEGIC:
Chun-Li ( 3rd Strike ) Elena ( 3rd Strike ) Middler ( Jojo's Bizarre Adventure )
PERV:
Gum ( Jet Set Radio ) I-No ( GGXX ) Jill Valentine but not as a blond, and Rebeca Chambers ( Resident Evil games ) Lili ( Tekken 5 DR ) Mischief ( TimeSplitters ) Gabrielle Fireseed ( Turok 3 ) Laura Parton and Kimberly Fox, even though you don't play as her ( D2 )
I also seem to have a lot of Ivy art on me, but that's b/c I needed it to troll StopTazmo, I don't really have a fascination with her...but I don't want to get rid of the pics.
