Here's the thing: I'm trying to figure out how to rip the opening from Contra III so I can use it to recreate an old project of mine. I'm pretty confused by the options given in ZSNES, though. I think I got it recorded, then I hit "DUMP", it plays what I recorded, but I have no idea if it saves it as some kind of video file anywhere.
Any help?

It saves it as a ZSNES movie file. Which you need to have the ROM in order to play it back.
I suggest you use SNES9X and record it to .avi right away.
If you still wish to use ZSNES, then just press ESC to open the options, go to MISC, then MOVIE OPT, then select RECORD.

uh, ZSNES has had ZMV-->multiple formats (raw, xvid, h264 or whatever) for a while now. If you're going to give advice, you might want to....um, check the latest info. If you're running Windows, dumping movies is pretty easy. There's a topic at the ZSNES forum about it that's fairly easy to follow: board.zsnes.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=11977Basically you need lame.exe (the one linked there) and mencoder.exe (from the mplayer package linked) in the same directory as ZSNES. Once you've recorded a ZMV file, you should be able to dump it directly. Make sure you have all the options checked that you want checked (ie, you might want to make sure that it will automatically combine the dumped video and audio). It shouldn't be much harder than that, although sometimes you'll get the occasional error from various other options you may have toggled. It's been a while since I dumped a movie (and I can't do it right now, grrrr), but if I remember correctly, a proper dump will first play through the movie in the emulator in real-time, then open up extra windows to convert. Once it's done, it should return to focusing on ZSNES, and there should be a file named "combined.avi" in your zsnes directory. Note that dumping a new movie will overwrite it (or at least I think it will, I don't believe I've tried dumping with 1.51 yet).

I don't need to check latest infos to give him advice because the advice I gave him is an even better solution than the one you gave: just use the SNES9X emulator to save directly to .avi.
No need to download external programs or follow complicated options.

Thanks for the tips. I tried the method ReyVGM suggested, but the one video file that I was able to create ended up being very choppy and unsuitable for what I'm working on (I have a decent PC now, so I'm not sure what happened there). I've yet to try to other method.
In the event I can't get that to work either, what are the odds one of you might be able to rip the intro and send it to me, preferably without sound? I just need it from the point after the Konami logo fades out to the Contra III title fades out.

Just download Fraps and you won't have to worry about recording on your computer again.

Registered version of Fraps costs 37 USD. Videos recorded with the demo version of Fraps are only 30 seconds long max and have watermarks in them. Unless Dire51 already has a registered version of Fraps or is interesting in buying one, I don't think Fraps is what he needs.

Just download Fraps and you won't have to worry about recording on your computer again. For emulation screenshots, Fraps is totally the best solution. For video captures, not so much. When I record with SNES9x, I record the key input first and then load that, record out to a huffyuv AVI that I later import and play with in VirtualDub or whatever I wind up using to encode to whatever format I decide to go to.

Hmmm.
Well, I don't plan to download Fraps, simply because aside from this project I'll never use it, most likely - and I certainly don't want to pay for something I'm never going to use.
I'm going to play around with SNES9x again and see what else I can do with it.
