I enjoyed reading the revamped article. I remember having the old VHS preview tape for the Turbo CD that advertised all the games on the system and was really intrigued by the Valis scenes on it. Sadly I wasn't able to get one myself until much later in 2003. Valis II and Exile were my first games on the system. I enjoyed Exile quite a bit, although I didn't really enjoy Valis II at such a late date. Thankfully Valis III proved to be much more enjoyable later on.

I recall the Famicom port of the original Valis was pretty hard, so much so that it would probably fit with the so hard it hurts category. There's even a hack that balances the odds in your favor. www.romhacking.net/hacks/248/

Guess I could have labeled it that and Kusoge for not making any goddamn sense, but maybe I just didn't feel anything anymore after the impossible computer game.

The Famicom Valis is one of the hardest games I've ever beaten. Every stage is huge and confusing (since everything looks the same) and it is hard to figure out what to do. The final castle as well is just a ridiculously over-sized maze that is a nightmare to try to navigate through. I don't think there's any charm to it at all; it is just a poorly conceived, bad game.

The Valis manga is basically pornography. Yuko doesn't really fight so much as barely avoid getting raped (by tentacles, by mid-bosses, etc.). Pretty sad, actually.

The really sad part is that THAT's a step up from Valis X.

I still plan to one day complete a Valis game. I've always loved the series' atmosphere (the later titles that is - classic early 16 bit style, still deeply rooted in 8 bit aesthetics, and if stuff looks samey, it only gives me the impression that the world is huge and thus individual parts look a bit anonymous. Hard to explain, really) and music, but I think the only entry I enjoyed gameplay-wise was part 3. And that one's still hard as hell. Or at least too hard for me to complete it without savespamming.
I guess the same goes for the old Castlevanias as well, but those have a ton of easier sequels I've completed. Can't say the same for Valis.
I'm not exactly a buff when it comes to PCE emulation and remember failing to emulate Rondo Of Blood, so I only ever played the Genesis games, though.

The really sad part is that THAT's a step up from Valis X. You know, prior to Valis X I would have told you that seeing a Valis game with fuck scenes was the best idea since sliced bread. Unfortunately, Valis X is pretty much disgusting.

I actually like the SNES game, though I know most people find it to be shit...
I was never able to beat it, though.

I guess from the sounds of it, it's seinen manga that skirts as close to what the editor allows without going 18+? Reminds me of certain manga turned anime shows that's practically 16/17+ porn. I think it's a sign of cheesecake for potential fans since the original's 80s flavor.

I was going to post a link to a page showing all the fun stuff but it seems that Chikubi Love was shut down . Anyway, it's sad though to see Yuko depicted as a total damsel when she was one of the first obviously female game protagonists (I know Samus came first, but it wasn't clear that she was a woman unless you cleared the game quickly).

I dunno, Japan is weird what passes the line for 18+ sometimes. Look at Mad Bull 34. It was published in Young Jump and is violent and raunchy in sex acts but is classified seinen and not marked 18+ like the actual monthy hentai mags. And the posted Valis manga doesn't have a icon mentioning it's restricted content/18+ like Valis X does. But I still see what you mean also by shifted theme. Yuko sounds like she lacks any agency in the battles, where before she goes sword drawn to kick ass, maybe flashing upskirt and sporting a torn uniform but still proven a warrior. Now it's seems she merely survives attacks struck upon her until she somehow wins or is saved by another. If we had Japanese fan discussions about the new material, I'd like to see their opinions on the changes. Maybe this is Japan's way of "modernizing" an old IP for new audiences, thinking that the only people who'd be interested in Valis would want more and more sexual situations. Like turning things into Visual Novels is their version of the 3rdPerson Shooter.

Well the Famicom game is hard, but if you use a guide it's possible.
Still felt alot better about finishing that then the MSX game since there, boss battles weren't even "battles", but me constantly getting air juggled by unavoidable swarms of bullets while trying to get off as many ranged shots as possible whenever I wasn't thrown through the air. And at least a map/guide can tell you where to go, instead of having one giant M.C.Escher infinite loop design for all levels (REALLY hate when developers do that -_-) and the arrow is so bloody impressise that even with it, it took me over half an hour to just get to the boss fight on level 4.

The blurb on Valis X reminded me of Kid Fenris's reaction: kidfenris.blogspot.com/2006/03/valis-returns.htmlNever played any of the series myself, but the art style used in print ads may have subconsciously pushed me into Japanese animation many years later (and NOT the kind represented by X)... Minor corrections: Yuko 's only saving grace is her ability to charge up her health bar a hundred times by picking up capsules left behind by defeated enemies. That achievement has to be put in perspectie, though, Other than in Konami's and Tecmo's series, though, they can be selected from a menu at any time. (Poor phrasing? Perhaps "Unlike in Konami's..." works better?) Although it is clearly a variation of the Genesis game, the y two differ quite a lot, The awkward two- teared jumping is gone, (two-tiered?) what that makes of queen Valia is never adressed, though. but as is t to be expected from an early localized CD title, It's largely based on the TurboGrafx-16 game, although it ads the weapon and armor selection from the computer versions. The latter actually freezes enemis, but also means that much of the e plot is lost to non-Japanese speakers. The game reuses most of the same sprites and many of the same background tiles a Valis IV, and a final one where the four of them team up for the big " shodown". (Assuming this isn't a Samurai Shodown reference...)
