Yeah. This game, along with RayCrisis, are in my top 5 shooters for the Playstation.

I agree with the "Golden Age" moniker. Square was pumping out a lot of different and interesting titles that weren't just standard RPGs in the PSX days, and each had their undeniable charm. Too bad we can't say the same about their PS2 lineup...
Einhander is pretty much the only shooter I played rigorously, and I loved every moment.
My favorite boss is that giant satellite in the pre-final stage. Here I was thinking I could breeze through his predictable laser attack and then scream like a little girl just before his missile barrage blows me to bits, and I never could beat the SOB on hard.
I think this article could use a boss gallery.

The atmosphere and soundtrack are also pretty unparalleled, and some of the secret weapons were pretty cool. I always really liked that lightsaber weapon (I think it was called Blade?) What about Sylpheed (X-Box 360)'s soundtrack? It had a few Einhander-esque Kenichiro Fukui tracks on it.... As far as how I feel about the game, at first I hated it out of blind Square hate, but it actually aged well, especially when you compare it to its competition on the system, the likes of Space Shot and Project X2. I still think I prefer ThunderForce 5 and Gradius Gaiden, but Einhander was definitely better than I originally gave it credit for, even if I still suck at it.

I like this game a lot. I think it's mostly because of the music and atmosphere, though.

EDIT: Make that three. Forgot about Tobal No. 2, but lol Japan-onry. Figures we get the mediocre first game and not the substantially improved second game. One of the biggest bullshits in 32-bit history. Even with imports, the Quest mode is pretty much moot unless you're well-versed in Japanese... feckin' wreckin' grumble mumble. Bullshit, I've finished quest mode even with the language barrier back then. You just need to know that eated food at max satiation makes defense EXP to go up, that pink diamonds are for capturing monsters (throw at 10-20% of their max HP) and that the potions description can be understood even by looking at the JP kanjis. Quest Mode IS otherwise *hard*, even if you are "well-versed in Japanese". It's basically a rogue-like game a la Fushigi no Dungeon with the difference that is a BeU game and that you always fight versus one opponent at a time.

What an incredibly bizarre thing to necro a thread for...
I should pick this one up. $40 for a shmup is just silly though.... However, two other points: Square was amazing in the PSX era it had the best Final Fantasy Trilogy, Chrono Cross, Romancing SaGa 2, Xenogears, I hear people like Mana games, and Tactics. The other thing is we should go through and update the links for these threads. Actually...
