hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/shocktroopers/shocktroopers.htmShock Troopers is amazing and I hadn't even discovered it until about a year ago when they had it in one of the Neo Geo machines at the Digital Press store. I just now played 2nd Squad for the first time, after hearing it was inferior to the original. I agree with the article, it's a downgrade, but it's still a decent game.

There's a link to a Page 2 of the article that doesn't lead anywhere.

Someone get a Bloody Wolf screenshots of its helicopter boss in that comparison section. Also final boss from Shock Troopers 2 is dead on the second to last boss from Thunder Zone. It's a very Data East-like boss with similar incarnations in Heavy Barrel/etc.

I kind of remember what game you mean, but I'm not seeing a Thunder Zone on GameFAQs... all I know is that it was released in America under an alternate title... Desert Assault, I believe. I kinda recall which one you mean. Wasn't it isometrically skewed? Anyway, both ST games are totally tops. The original one still rules more, but ST2ndS is also bitching run-n-gun blastastic action. Maybe we should have some sort of run-n-gun day where we release ST alongside other titles of the genre?

I'll definitely be sticking this one up soon next to Mercs.
Thunder Zone is an arcade game which GameFAQs may not list.

Would you like more screenshots for boss comparisons? The boss that you fight on the boat in ST is more or less identical to the boss in the level with gun turrets in Mercs. There are a couple bosses in ST that are pretty much the same as the second boss from Mercs as well.
Bloody Wolf and Thunder Zone? I thought there was some kind of reference to a few other games as well, but I could not remember which. I could look for screenshots of those as well, or even take them myself if I can find the time. Hell, would you like screenshots comparing the character Jackal's (from ST) grenade with the grenades from the game Jackal and Commando (which Jackal totally stole its grenades from) while I'm at it?
Holy crap! I completely forgot about that Contra boss! Would you like screenshots of that as well?

Shock Trooper...one of the last coin-ops I've played at the arcade...I remember making it to the last level with Big Mama.Top stuff, arguably the best overhead run'n gun I ever played.Never played the sequel and to be honest the graphics look a bit off.

Heh, Gordon Freeman is in Shock Troopers 2. Anyway... Fio who? (Yeah-yeah, I know she's that "megane" girl from Metal Slug series, but someone else might not.)

Oh yeah, total greatness... And I agree that the second game is also good, but I also agree that it definitely isn't as good as the first.

I finally got an AES conversion of the first one recently, it's amazing. A couple of notes:
* I've heard there are two versions of the game: one that *only* lets you go as lonely wolf. * A friend of mine said there's actually a THIRD game, not on MVS. I'll try and get more info. * I don't know if this was an hallucination or what, but I recall playing Lonely Wolf as the Native American guy and getting custom story cutscenes. He was riding down a mountainside (middle-ish of the Mountain path, I think) and they did custom dialogue. I need to play more to investigate.

I thought the Lonly Wolf setting was down to a dip-switch, but looking through both rom-sets in MAME shows me otherwise...there is no such option to disable Team Battle mode.

I missed the bandwagon on this one, too. I played alot of Neo Geo back in my arcade-stomping days, but I missed this gem until I read about it here. Emulating it now on my PSP, and having a blast. Brings back memories of playing MERCs and Heavy Barrel with my buddies when I was a kid.

Maybe we should have some sort of run-n-gun day where we release ST alongside other titles of the genre? This is pretty much the best idea ever. There are so many games in the genre that would be great to see here. Ikari, Iron Tank, Jackal, Nitro Ball, Labyrinth Runner, Jail Break, Iron Horse, Front Line, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Mystic Warriors, Sega Ninja, Soldiers of Fortune, Gun.Smoke, Bloody Wolf, Heavy Barrel, Midnight Resistance, Aliens, Desert Assault, Out Zone, NARC, Caliber.50, Rambo III, Crazy Cop, and Assault Suits would all be awesome to see go up.

I definetly have to track this game down. I miss the run n gun genre one of those great lost game types if you will.
