www.hardcoregaming101.net/kingofthemonsters/kingofthemonsters.htmCan't say much about this one - played one of the Genesis ones years ago, and I can barely remember it. I'm not much of a kaijuu fan nor a wrestling fan, so they never really clicked, but they definitely have fans. Isn't that "War of the Monsters" kinda sorta similar?

Anyhow, Beetle Mania's profile is showing Woo, and Clawhead's profile is missing from KotM 2. I still have the text if you need it.

Cool article. Very nice info. Sounds like the GBA Godzilla and Genesis King of Monsters 2 are worth picking up.
The majority of GBA fighting games don't have single cart multi at all. GBA has limited memory for download games. Most fighting games on the GBA are too large to be downloaded in full to the GBA's memory. The download process can also take a long time depending on how big the file is.
Wayforward designed the GBA Godzilla, not Infogrames, the publisher. Wayforward made some surprisingly excellent games on the GBC like Xtreme Sports and Shantae. Their GBA and DS track record is a bit more iffy, but they made the awesome Contra 4 and Justice League Heroes: The Flash is pretty good.

KOTM was one of my favorite (arcade) games growing up. My bro and I loved playing the tag team bedlam mode. I much prefer this over Saturday Night Slam Masters... though I liked SNSM a lot (the 4 player mode anyhow)
If you want to read more about the SNES KOTM port, see my site below.

It's not Wayforwards' lack of programming quality or skill. Any GBA games that support single-cart multiplayer are limited to very low download capacities, which was a very deceptive feature when the GBA came out and translates into limited playing options: -F-Zero: No racer choice, only 4(?) circuits available. -Mario Kart: Everybody races as Yoshi, limited circuits too. I used to have most early GBA multiplayer games because I would play with my friends all the time, and this pissed me off big time.

Please tell me that someone around here has scans of the ridiculous magazine ads for the SNES and Genesis KotM 2.

This was ADK/SNK and I didn't know it back when I originally played it, shame on me... they're two of my favourite developers now, next to Konami, Capcom, Namco, Squenix, and the good stuff.
After reading this, I think it would be a good idea to have a simcity type game with a Kaiju-Monster-Fire-Pro-Wrestling style editing system, and then you get to KILL IT!

It's good to see an article on this series. The original KotM was the first game I played on a Neo-Geo way back when. But I couldn't disagree more about the version comparison of the second game.
The Neo-Geo version of The Next Thing is virtually unplayable. It looks nice, but like the article mentions, the grapples seem to be completely randomized. You win when the computer decides you win and lose when the computer decides you lose. I don't know if I could even call it a game with a straight face; since the player has no influence whatsoever over the outcome, it's more like a marginally interactive movie.
But the SNES version cured all that ailed it. The grapples are totally fair. It takes some time to get used to rocking the d-pad, but once you do you can consistently win. And the blocking ability lets you avoid damage, so the fights are based on skill and not just slugfests. I've played through the game tons of times on co-op, and can consistently one-life it. It's remarkable how much the whole experience improved when SNK didn't need to coerce the player into plunking in more quarters.
The Genesis version is a different beast, much better for PvP matches but worse for single player and co-op.

There hasn't been a new KOTM game all of a sudden, but there's a few mistakes in this article.
ADK is constantly referred to as being a developer of both games, which is a little odd. Most of the other Neo-Geo Alpha/ADK games of the time have their name clearly on the title screen, and this game doesn't. Looking at the credits, some of the other staff members went on to make Savage Reign, and the game's producer, Hamachi Papa, also worked on Beast Busters for SNK years before, so they're obviously SNK folks- I don't think ADK had anything to do with it, unless there's something I'm missing.
King of the Monsters 2 was released in 1992, not 1991.
"The version of King of the Monsters 2 for SNES is a disaster, mostly due to the fact that you have to rapidly push Left and Right on the D-pad to win grapples, which makes them even more difficult than in the arcade version." The fact that you can actually win the grapples at all in the SNES version automatically step it above the arcade game. The grappling system in the arcade version explicitly works against you, and gives you no certain way of winning, but with a little effort, you can totally win every grapple in the SNES game.
There's also some other changes in the SNES version that make the game less obnoxious to play- Beetle Master no longer clones himself, some attacks no longer knock you down instantly, that sort of thing. This might be veering into the field of opinion, though, so it might just be me.
Also, it might be worth mentioning that the Genesis port of KOTM2 was coded by a tiny company called Betop- that might explain why it's so different.

It wouldn't surprise me that there was something off about the article. I remember we had to revise it quite a bit before it went it up.
I can fix all of the ADK/SNK stuff, but I have little knowledge of the games at all. Would anyone be able to give some detail and write some revised text to stick in the article.

Well, some whingy twat pointed out that this place is a blight on humanity because of a few terrifying errors in a game about monsters smashing stuff, so I decided to fix this up, at least a little: www.hardcoregaming101.net/kingofthemonsters/kingofthemonsters.htmI'm not qualified to judge the quality of the ports, all of these games have seemed pretty awful to me, but at least it fixed up the ADK mixup.

After a quick Google, I found the twat in question - wow, that attack was a little unwarranted.

That was probably me. I made this thread after having a change of heart on the matter but, uh, forgot to make the article a little less hard on ya. That said, I didn't call your site a blight on humanity- I just said it was unreliable at times. And that I'd like to go through it with a red marker pen. And that bit about spreading misinformation was a joke. Could've been so much worse! Also, I'd prefer you to call me a tosser rather than a twat. Far more amusing that way. Now that you've fixed the article though, consider the offending comments cheerfully withdrawn

Oh. That was you, then. Well, thanks for the corrections, I guess?
Mistakes do happen - we are human after all - and we try to be as accurate as possible, but we do tend to get a little bit cranky when someone takes one of our errors REALLY seriously.
That being said, if you DID want to go through the site with a red pen, we would ultimately appreciate it.

Not a problem Mistakes do happen - we are human after all - and we try to be as accurate as possible, but we do tend to get a little bit cranky when someone takes one of our errors REALLY seriously. My apologies for that. I'm a bit of hard-ass at times, but I'll try to be more delicate with my words next time. I know where you're coming from now though- someone once sent me an email saying "You're quite fat and don't know anything about Puzzle Bobble" after I gave Puzzle Bobble 4 a bad review. Puzzle Bobble is serious business, who knew? That being said, if you DID want to go through the site with a red pen, we would ultimately appreciate it. At some point, certainly.
