So, I know that this is bumping the thread a bit, but I hope that this is allowed as long as I have something to contribute to this thread. I know that this forum thread and the article is pretty old by now, but I'd love to share this anyway. Me and DaVince21 have compared the Japanese and Engrish text of the game, as well as given a more clearer and legible version of the dialogue than what the "World" arcade version given us English speakers. I did the transcription of the Japanese, romaji and Engrish, and DaVince21 has given a more proper translation into English from the Japanese text as well as cleaned up the romaji a bit. This actually happened a while ago this/last year, but I never publicly showed it up until now. Here is the Google docs for the comparison: docs.google.com/document/d/1FELj57dNtKLiWZ7nelXNtjIiWfKBS4pbEM6tsPDj-3c/edit?usp=sharingOh, and by the way, if anyone wants to use this for their hypothetical fan translations of the FM Towns/PS1/Saturn ports of the game, either as a basis or outright copying the text verbatim into the game, they are free to do so. Might convert this to Pastebin soon enough. Good translation! Looking it over, I have some constructive criticism to parlay for the script and any editors: -Good on the choice of using "Keys" for "Neji", as it usually refers to the wind-up keys of old clocks. -"osowarete" in straight hiragana usually translates as "to suffer/be tormented with nightmares", and along with the "higai" kanji later, you might want to change the line "The towns were overtaken one by one, causing each town much grief as their time stopped." to something like "One by one, each town was plunged into a nightmarish agony as their time stood still." -Some of the contractions for some lines "Haven't", "Isn't" are not required. -You can restructure some lines like "All of the townsfolk have fled the town because of how unlivable it has become." to "That town's become so uninhabitable that everyone there had fled." -Funny how "Aah, wait a... a moment!" of the original English line is the correct translation, but feels very flat. Kudos for the re-do there. Anyone doing the patch may wish to elongate the last word like the Japanese version does to, say, "Stay right were you arrreeee...!" -Similarly, if pressed for space, the "Are you going to go to the next town? Cross through the desert, it’s quicker that way." can be compressed to "If you're heading to next town, there's a shortcut through the desert." -Translation choice, but the ways "komatte iru" can be interpreted can change "It’s a really big issue for us that it’s not raining, too." to something like "We're all really concerned about the lack of rain/that it's not raining, too." -Not sure if the "bring it to ya" part is necessary (good work with the inflection though), so the line there can go "Terribly sorry, but I'm not gonna hand over this key to ya just yet!" -The "You seem to be regretting your actions sincerely, so I’ll let the matter pass just this once." is a bit of a mouthful/janky, so it can be tweaked to "Your repentance seems sincere, so I’ll let it slide/I'll overlook this just this once." -There's a lot of reuse of "modoshi" at the end, which is okay in Japanese, but with English, using more variations of "return time to normal" for the 3 lines in the ending might be preferrable, like "restore time" or so.

This is some very interesting insight. I'll be sure to take these suggestions up with the translator DaVince21 when I get the chance.
Also, in regards to hacking the console versions, I wonder if it's possible to do a "language select" of sorts where the player can switch between the properly translated script or the original arcade Engrish dialogue, either through an extra added in the options menu or a button code cheat. Taito's Engrish does have its infamous charm, especially in regards to this game. Then again, it'd probably be too much effort to program, and would probably be easier to release two separate patches. I even wonder if the English fontset from the arcade version is included tucked away in the graphics for the Japan-only console versions or if it has to be remade/reprogrammed for this purpose... (either way, the stage 3 legs should probably be kept in either way)
