I recommend the second version of PC too or the Commodore 64 one (because of the neat intro music).

I found it kinda lame that Maniac Mansion Enhanced used Razor's censored hair from the NES version. I don't know. Her hair looks more or less the same in all four versions. It's really hard to render a punk rock hair using 8-bit bitmaps anyway. I really loved the NES version when I've played not-so long ago and didn't really mind the censorship that much. I'm kinda partial G-rated insult "tunahead". I never understood why Syd and Jeff are in the game. Syd's abilities are interchangeable with Razor's, so it's really a matter of preferring one over the other. I think you could sort of justify Jeff if you want to make the game a bit harder, but I don't see much purpose of doing that in an adventure game. Also I'm surprised at all the love that Day of the Tentacle gets. I guess I was never that much interest in the game due to the more cartoony graphics, but now I tempted to give it a try.

DoTT DOS comes with V1 of MM, so you get that version anyway if you get DoTT.

Never really could get into the original Maniac Mansion. I think it was a combination of the clunky old SCUMM interface, the PC speaker music, or the fact that I played Day of the Tentacle "first" (well you had to with the cd-rom version), it just never clicked with me.
DOTT on the other hand... well... the week and a half it took me to solve the IRS agents puzzle the first time shows my fervant unwavering dedication to the game. Nowadays though I can beat it in two hours.

Two remarks:
- the french version of DotT contained the enhanced PC maniac mansion, not the blocky original, probably because only that one had been translated. I suspect it may have been that way for other foreign versions of the game too.
-I've never quite been sure of that, but back then I was told Jeff could invariably get high scores on Meteor mess and the others would occasionnally miss, thus being unable to see Fred's score. Really not sure about that though.

Interesting bit about the versions of MM within DOTT! Reading the article, I was puzzled because I was sure it was V2 in the Italian version of DOTT a friend of mine had.
I'm tempted to try the NES version (would have been nice if someone had translated the Famicom one just for fun, even if it's the worst), I don't like how some locations were "cramped" into single screens, but some details look even nicer than the second DOS version.
To me, DOTT was and is slightly overrated: even with the three eras and some awesome puzzles, I felt it "cramped", with an Edison mansion looking much smaller than in the original ("intimidating proportions" where?). I probably prefer adventures with more country/globe-spanning plots and more varied locales (Sam & Max Hit the Road, Zak McKracken and Fate of Atlantis are among my favourites in fact). Lenght issues aside, some puzzles are really too wacky.
However, I said "slightly", which means I stll love the graphics (the game was hailed as "a cartoon adventure" on the box), the characters, some cutscenes (Hoagie "riding the wave" while the Chron-o-John goes awry is priceless), the voice acting, many puzzles, and the overall crazyness of all - other humorous adventures were never able to reach the same levels without sounding forced.
Apparently they are considering resurrecting the brand after Sam & Max and Monkey Island. I really hope so!

Sorry, I also forgot another nitpick: the article says cutscenes in MM were the first in a videogame, but didn't Karateka already had some intermission scenes, way back in 1984?

Yeah, that's why I said purported. That was actually a claim Ron Gilbert made. I guess like a lot of "firsts", it depends on how you define it. IIRC nobody actually talked in Karateka, it was just animation, whereas the ones in Maniac Mansion advance the plot, if that makes a difference.

I noticed there are currently two more fan remakes for Maniac Mansion in the works.
