Being in Helsinki. I know its normal for people who live here, but as a person who has spend 10 years in a very smaller city, damn I love this place!
Also, the Theater Academy exam is tomorrow and Im thrilled with anticipation. Also found out that another one of my colleges is also attending, making it a second person I know who's also trying (the other guy has exam day today). Awesome!

Break a leg, Chosen! (I don't know if that tradition is in Finland, but in my drama experience that saying is as fine a wish for success as any for a thespian!)

A nice, warm, fuzzy memory I have when I was around 8 or 9 years old was this one fall evening when me, my mom, older sister, and older brother were all at home together. My dad was probably at work at the time, but he could be such a jerk at times that it was most likely a good thing that he wasn't there. Anyway, my mom was busy cooking and frying food in the kitchen for dinner. She had just the stove top light on, so it was still kind of dark in the kitchen with just a small, yellow light coming from above the stove. My sister had just come back from cheerleading practice and was still in her uniform. She was standing in the kitchen with my mom and they were both chatting about something. My brother, meanwhile, was in the living room, laying on the floor on his stomach playing Phantasy Star 1 for the Sega Master System. I remember he was on Motavia, the desert planet, fighting some worm monsters at one point. I wasn't really doing anything but just walking around from the living room to the kitchen and back, just hanging around in the background, observing what my family members were doing. I just remember feeling this warm, fuzzy feeling and at peace at the time. For some reason the atmosphere felt more cozy in that moment than usual. I miss times like that. Just being around my family in a nice, peaceful setting. I have to second this. Times with family together do rock my world, especially now that everyone's so busy and it's not terribly common. The best Christmas I ever had was when my brother was sent home from the hospital before our school's break started. I can't help tearing up when I remember it. On the less sentimental side of things, chili dogs, good classical music, video games (duh, or I wouldn't be posting here), and cute animals.

I hate my job. I hate the people I work with. I'm pretty happy, though, because this shitty job just got me a free Xbox 360 slim, 250 gig model.

Well, that's more than a decent freebie. Sorry you hate your job, tho.

It's like those birds that served as washing machines on the Flintstones or something. "It's a living."

MISSION ALL OVER!180 days in the army. My rifleman training is now complete and Im now in the reserves. It was a hell-of-a-ride and there were times when I wanted to quit, but I pushed on and on since Im a too hot-headed person. At the beginning I was a miserable and they made me a wreck, but in the end, to use a cliche, they made me into a man. Feels great that I managed to do it. I know plenty of guys who quitted for one reason or another. But for now, its time to get back to normal life. Get some unemployment fund, go back to school, start doing acting again and finish some of those games.

Saw a light at the end of the tunnel and after distracting everyone else I ran for it!
I've been working this totally shitty job for the past year. So I am working 9a-7p, Monday through Sat. Even if you take out the various breaks, that's 54 hours a week. So I should be getting 56 hours of overtime pay every month right!? No, because my company is BREAKING THE LAW and have this totally nonsensical overtime system: -max overtime pay is 30 hours per month. "What if I go over 30 though?" "Try to keep it at 30 or under." In other words, when you hit 30 hours you punch out and return to your desk to work for free. -Saturday, 9a-6p doesn't count towards overtime. In other words, you work for FREE on Saturday -12:00-13:00 is a break you work through but aren't paid for -18:00-18:15 is your second break you work through but aren't paid for
So I end up actually getting paid for only 24 hours of overtime per month. 54-24=30 hours I am basically working for free, per month.
Where I live we have long holidays mandated by law. One in May, one at the end of the year/beginning of the year. And one other long holiday in the summer that is not a law, but everything else is closed so there is no sense in working.
When there is a month where we have a long holiday, we are not allowed to take any sick time/paid holidays. On top of that, every day during the week before and after the long holiday, we have to work a full day, and then at night travel an hour away to the shipping center and fucking pack boxes until 22:00 or 23:00. By the time I get home it is past midnight.
Pay is pretty good for a skilled immigrant worker, but not worth this shit.
~~
So after about 10 months of this I decided I'd look for another job. Went on some interviews (had to use my sick time to do this, which meant no days off except Sundays for the past couple months) and just last week I got an offer. Much bigger company, more pay, two days off a week, chance to move into management if I work hard.
Signed the contract and sent it off yesterday and will start on 9/20. The timing worked out perfectly too. I waited until I got my bonus ($~2500!) and a couple days later gave my notice. And then I've got a four day paid holiday coming up in a few weeks. After that I come back and work the rest of the week and then goodbye!

That's great news, man. I know you've hated your job for quite a while. It's always great to see someone getting away from a bad work environment.

Thanks! Next place might be worse, who knows? All I know is I can't stand my job now and it's not something that would improve by just sticking it out for a couple more years (though the typical tactic in this culture when it comes to dealing with an awful situation is "just grin and bear it for 5 years and see if things don't get a little better").
