I have been avoiding the PSP like the plague and as much as i would like to reiterate my disdain for the the fundamentals of the system, things like Tactics Ogre and Valkyria Chronicles 3 really pull at me. So i got a used PSP 1000 for 99$ (the cheapest i could find) just to play these games and was pleasantly suprised at how cheap the games were. So I know there are some PSP users here who could recommend some games for this system. Inevitably I will have to spend some time with relatives, so if i had a bag full of games I could avoid their inane bantering for as long as humanly possible!
thanks in advance

You seem interested in strategy games, so go for the FF Tactics port, Jeanne D'arc, Disgaea, and probably Class of Heroes. Also, not sure if you're much of a pinball fan, but get on the Playstation Store and grab the Pinball Dreams and Pinball Fantasies PSP Minis.

You know, I never really understood the lack of love for PSP. I personally havent tried it, but it seems like a fine portable system, with plenty of good titles. It seems to have stuff just for about everyone from RPG's to action-platformers to retro-rereleases. And with a download service to boot. And you can always use it for portable emulation or some homebrew (I've heard Stepmania is a popular choice for that).
It it badly designed? Bad battery? What makes it so that people "avoid it like a plague"?

- Either Capcom Classics Collection Both come with a great variety of Capcom stuff, but if you're not into shooters, fighters or platformers (and I don't know why you wouldn't), it might not be entirely up your alley. They're really affordable and both collections have enough games to justify their purchases. - Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles Comes with the Rondo of Blood remake, original and even Symphony of the Night with a few new features. If you like Castlevania, there's no reason to not get this. - Class of Heroes Addictive little dungeon crawler. I personally enjoyed it more than I did Etrian Odyssey, although I wasn't into the whole "make your own map" thing. - Gradius Collection They can be a bit hard to play on handhelds, but this is worth it for portable Gradius Gaiden alone. - Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X Excellent remake of the original with the option to now play as Vile. Comes with quite a few anime cutscenes and an entire OVA packed onto the UMD. - Mega Man Powered Up My third favorite game on any system. Incredibly, incredibly robust amount of things to do and classic Mega Man fun at its best. - Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Nearly as good as the console games, at least in my opinion. It's very lowly priced, now. I actually urge not getting Peace Walker, though, they trample on established canon that I really liked and the gameplay itself is absurdly Japanese in how OCD it is (Portable Ops is, too, but to more sane levels). - Valkyria Chronicles II Perhaps as OCD as Peace Walker, but considerably more rewarding to manage and a very addictive, fun experience. Read the full review I wrote over at GameFAQs.

It it badly designed? Bad battery? What makes it so that people "avoid it like a plague"? It has had several terribly obnoxious/offensive advertising campaigns, a vindictive fanbase full of aggressive fanboys and the games themselves are lacking in comparison to the DS library in every department other than RPGs. Mechanically, I can't understand why people tend to dislike it. The screen is huge, the backlight is nice, the controls are good (or at least adequate, I find the d-pad lacking in anything that relies on skill-intensive input via it) and the graphics are tops. In my opinion, it should have done better than the DS, but the DS got all the good games.

Picking up the recent Ys releases should be a no-brainer (assuming you enjoy Ys, and if not, shame on you!), and I would recommend hunting down Riviera and Yggdra Union as well if you don't already own the GBA versions. Half Minute Hero shouldn't be missed, and neither should the Badman games. Persona PSP is great, and if you're a Persona 3 fanatic, P3P has plenty of exclusive content that may make it worth purchasing even if you own P3 FES. Oh, and while I'm thinking about it, Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble is a pretty entertaining brawler, albeit rather toothless.

I agree with what's already been said, especially the Capcom Collections, Gradius ditto and Castlevania Drac X Chronicles. I would also like to add the following; Ultimate Ghosts'n Goblins Probably the best entry in the series IMO, but as always with G'n'G you will die. A lot. Taito Legends Powered-Up If you're anything like me, you can't get enough of compilations like this. The Capcom collections are arguably better, but you still want this, trust me. Ape Academy 2 Yes, I'm dead serious. If you can find this cheap it provides a lot of laughs Critics hated it though. Little Big Planet Not as good as on the PS3, but it's still a classy platformer, if that's your thing. Kingdom of Paradise (Key of Heaven in Europe) Martial arts action RPG that I enjoyed quite a bit, but don't expect OMG THE BEST RPG EVAH! It's solid though and has a rather interesting battle system.

Even if you don't enjoy the earlier Ys games, the new ones are the type that make significant improvements in the gameplay department without sacrificing the core experience of the series (wow, that sounds like marketing mumbo-jumbo), so if you had a bad experience with one of the earlier entries, it's still worth giving the new ones a shot.
I'm going to go ahead and recommend Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep. It's a content-packed little action RPG, with three characters that each have their own stages and abilities, an addictive skill system that does away with MP, an optional board game that can be used to level up said skills, an arena mode when you just want to fight stuff, and lots and lots of different ways to kill things.
It's at the earliest part of the timeline, too, so you don't have to play any other entries in the series to understand the story. Unfortunately, the story itself feels very rushed, and the Kingdom Hearts mythos as a whole is very weird. I like it that way, but most people don't. So proceed with caution.
Another fun and cheap game you can pick up is Pursuit Force and it's sequel, Extreme Justice. Great little driving action games where you chase cars and capture enemy cars. Much better than it sounds.

Gonna be seconding a lot of recs here already.
Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, Class of Heroes, FF Tactics port, Jeanne D'Arc, Dracula X Chronicles, Valkyria Chronicles II, Mega Man: Powered Up, Yggdra Union port.
For imports I like I have Princess Crown port and the Fate/Tiger Colosseum games, which are cute arena fighters based on Fate/Stay Night and such, though if you get one of those, get F/TC Upper. It's positively hilarious/goofy. Region free is the best region.
Personally, I also think the PSP is well made, for reasons already stated, and the internet browser, while not the best, has been useful for killing time at airports for me. I also like it's internet radio function a lot and use it every day.
Upcoming stuff like the TO remake, VC3, and PE3 are getting my hopes up that the system will continue to be quality. The PSP is sexy in its own right.

I'll play anything really, everything from Call of Duty Black ops to professor layton. I haven't played a Ys game since my turbographic 16 CD days but to be a member of this board i better get on those. You can google "best psp games" and i get things like socom and resistance and things i couldnt even IMAGINE being fun with a single analog stick (perhaps i am mistaken on this), you ask here and you get some good feedback.
I turned on the system, looked at the back round and thought "damn this aint no DS" because the graphics are so far beyond what my DSI does, perhaps I should have caved on this earlier. I really appreciate all the feedback, I already bought FFT war of the lions and Joan D arc (or whatever) because of the wonderful feedback and am trying to find the rest of the games here for a good price. I never played the proper FFT only the avalice gba/ds outings which some swear are not even in the same league as this game. Thanks again for all the help here, with the psp2/psp phone rumors swirling around it is a good time to be up on the state of the art of psps as, as fun as 3D looks.... until software is shown that makes games better because they are now in 3D rather than otherwise, I'm not so sure I'll be a nintendo portable player next gen.

If you want an excellent shooter in PSP, try the Syphon Filter games - they get around the lack of second analog stick in an interesting way. Sure, they make you use the face buttons as a right stick, but you don't need to actually aim with them, as the game features a useful lock-on feature which works very well with the cover system.

There's a demo of Resistance, if you want to see what it's like. I think it's the "stop to aim" type of shooter, if I recall correctly, so the lack of a second stick isn't too big a problem.

As others said, the Ys games are great (Ys 7, Ys:Oath in Felghana, and the upcoming Ys I & II Chronicles). Gurumin is a fun little action/rpg. Gitaroo Man Lives! is fun, if you haven't played it already on the PS2. Also The Legend of Heroes:Trails in the Sky is the first of a fantastic rpg trilogy coming out March of next year.
