Excellent article on a game I had long wanted to know about.
A question for the author though: does the game have a battle system? You mentioned enemies, and the need to avoid them, but no mention of the consequences. I've not played it, in fact I know nothing beyond what I read in the article and some forum topics a long time ago, but is there a turn based battle system like in most RPG Maker games? Or is it something different? If so, how do they function?

Thanks! You should really give it a try--it's fun and free. There's a link to a download source at the bottom of the article. I tested it, and it installed and played easily. I left some aspects of the game unexplained to avoid spoiling the surprise, but I should have mentioned combat more. The enemies are referred to as Toriningen ("bird people") (I think it's a fan name). Some are neutral characters until you attack them with your knife--one of the obtainable effects--but others are angry from the start. If they catch you, you are sent to an enclosed area that can only be escaped by waking up. There is no defense against the enraged Toriningen. There is no permanent penalty, but it can be a pain to try and find an area again, so it's worth trying to avoid them, typically by having them follow you and then escape by a different route. @ the game's wiki: yumenikki.wikia.com/wiki/Toriningen

In case I didn't answer your question (I can be a bit thick): no, there is no turn based fighting in the game. You can kill some non-dangerous characters with your knife, and the Toringen behave as I told you. It's really more of an adventure game made with the RPG Maker engine.

Shouldn't this be listed as a doujin/independent game?

Thanks for the answers impr3ssion! It's great that we've got coverage for the game now, since I recall a time when I couldn't find much on it at all.

The link to the LSD article is dead. On another note: I need to try Yume Nikki ASAP.
