www.hardcoregaming101.net/gitarooman/gitarooman.htmiNis' precursor to Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents brings us to the earlier days of rhythm gaming, back when they patterned themselves after Parappa the Rapper, with goofy characters/songs telling an even more ridiculous story. It's a bit on the short side (10 songs) versus Ouendan (15-ish) but still longer than Parappa/Lammy (6). I also don't think the actual gameplay is as fun, but the soundtrack, outside of the annoying drum n' bass and reggae songs in the mid-game, are ace.

Off the top of my head:
- I vaguely remember reading that "U-1" is a pun on the Japanese word for "loser", but someone else'll have to confirm that.
- Puma has an "alternate form" that you might want to put a picture of next to his profile.
- Perhaps a little more emphasis is needed as far as the story/theme is concerned: even after U-1 discovers this awesome, unique power within himself to become Gitaroo Man, he utterly disregards it just because he wants to impress Pico, who likes skateboarding (which U-1 is awful at). Some of the inter-stage text offers additional thoughts on unattainable goals and the frustration of not being who you wish you were ("What is talent? I think it's the ability to feel pleasure instead of pain during a struggle"). At least, I always considered this unusual subject matter to be one of the game's charms.
- I think that COIL is actually Koei's in-house band (sorta like Zuntata is for Taito).
- IIRC the PSP version also includes an "Easy" difficulty not found on the PS2 version, and runs at 30 FPS instead of 60.
- Most of the music is the same across all regions, but the lyrics to a few songs (the opening theme, Flyin' To Your Heart, maybe one or two others) were translated from Japanese to English and re-recorded.
If I think of any more later I'll add it.

Wow, there was never an article on this?
Also, the expert mode is one of the craziest difficulty spikes I have ever seen.

Maybe it should be noted that this only applied to the US release (or was it in Japan as well?). In Europe it has never been rare nor expensive. So I was able to get my hands on this fairly easy some years ago for like 5 Euros and I loved it...which is something I can't say of Ouendan to be honest.

Ouendan has Koi No Dance Site, which is one of the most fun levels ever.

These are definitely correct, I've updated the article to reflect these, thanks! I found COIL's site and didn't find any reference to Koei...I think they're indepedent.

Personally Gitaroo Man has to be my favourite style of rhythm game - it feels a bit freer and dynamic than Parapa but without quite so much weird complexity that Ouendan used (I just could never get use to it). Although I disagree with the article in regards to voice acting - I feel the poor dubbing job suits the art style.

Also loved the voice acting. This game had a great localization, even with the visual text puns.

And the thing about only the US release having been rare at a time isn't even worth a reply?
