Really looking forward to this one. I want to give these games a shot but would like to avoid DOSbox as much as possible - I need that port coverage

What I would love to see are the DS/PS3 being covered. The SuFami ones look like the definitive versions with the same gameplay just with updated graphics, well as updates as FP DCs can be anyways.

This is gonna be a big one. How many games there are in the series and how many ports?

Something close to 50 individual games (including Japan-only mobile) and more than 20 versions for the first one (the ports get fewer and fewer as the series goes on).

This guy has a cute little series of pseudo-reviews for the SNES ports of the original three Wizardry games:
This is pretty much the way I felt back in the early 90s, trying to work my way through Wizadry I and II on the NES, completely blind and equipped with just a book of graph paper and a pencil.

This might be the most massive article yet if it gets pulled off! It'll be a tough call deciding whether you want to give more than a mention to all the Wizardry spinoffs created by former developers (e.g. Wizards & Warriors, Elminage, Generation XTH, Class of Heroes).
As for the original trilogy, I think the PS collections have the SFC collection beat but that's admittedly a matter of taste.

I'm not particularly knowledgeable about the JP-only releases for this series. You're saying the original three games were ported to the PS1? How are the load times? Do they have a "complete" collection with 1-3, including English translations, a la the SFC version?

Wiz 1-3 were remade on the PS and SS with options for mostly English text (about the same as in the SFC collection). The SFC collection is called "Story of Llylgamyn" and the PS/SS version is called "Legacy of Llylgamyn." Wiz 4-5 were also remade for the PS in Wiz New Age of Llylgamyn. The loading times for both games are nearly nonexistent. There's no battle loading and a very quick load to dungeons, unlike some other disc versions.
There are also the PCE versions that combine the first 5 Wiz games into 3 installments (I-II, III-V, and V) that also have most of the same English options and similar loading. These were ported by naxat soft rather than ASCII so they sport different, colorful monster sprites and snazzier music. But as with the SFC versions, the lack of an automap is too much of a handicap for me nowadays.
And for other folks like me who prefer to legally own games, the SFC version is very expensive (Nintendo Power-only) while the PS/SS/PCE games and its re-releases are very cheap.

Ah, great. Thanks for the info. I've been tinkering around with the SFC version for a while, but I'll definitely have to check out the PS1 and PCE releases, as well. I'm assuming that none of these allow you to import your parties to each subsequent game, then?

Why wouldn't you assume that feature? Every JP version of the original Wizardry trilogy allows you to transfer characters between games. The FC, SFC, PCE, and PS versions are no exceptions (even though Wiz III was released in another installment on PCE; the FC version requires a Turbo File accessory to do so). Now, you can't transfer to Wiz IV but that wasn't possible in the original computer versions either.

I'd also read somewhere that you can only import characters in the original PC versions of the games, which lead me to believe it wasn't an option in any of the console releases. Of course you never had the option in any of the NES or SNES games, either. Kind of sucks that we never got Wizardry III for the NES, as well.

The Ps1 remakes were also released for Windows btw. I'm sure it will eventually all be covered here. Here's an excellent resource, click on the left frame for great overviews of the available games: www.pekori.jp/~emonoya/goods/

Writing a comprehensive article on all things Wizardry is a gargantuan task to undertake. More power to everyone involved.

Of all the coming stuff, this is the one I'm waiting the most for. I also want to know all about IV, since I heard that game was the most brutal of the series. And considering how "easy" the other ones are.
