Asteroids was also ported to the N-Gage in Atari Masterpieces Vol. 1. Also, the article is missing an official Asteroids sequel on i-devices, named Asteroids: Gunner...not to mention the myriad of clones available on itunes, which would probably bloat up the whole article quite a bit too much. Fortunately, I've got all of them covered in the iOS shooter article. Though Asteroids: Gunner should probably be mentioned somewhere in this article as well.

Asteroids was also ported to the N-Gage in Atari Masterpieces Vol. 1. Yeah, that also goes for Space Duel (on Vol. 2). Put those in the system listing for both games. With Asteroids, you never know when the search for ports will end... Also, the article is missing an official Asteroids sequel on i-devices, named Asteroids: Gunner...not to mention the myriad of clones available on itunes, which would probably bloat up the whole article quite a bit too much. Gonna wait till it shows up in the iOS article, though, so I can link to it.

Really really great article derboo. The amount of research this article had is incredible. Fantastic. Even though it doesn't matter too much (I think its just interesting and hilarious), but Taco Bell has had Asteroids along with Breakout, Lunar Landing and Centipede for the PC as kid's meal toys. They did it once in 2010 and now this year around the same time that you just posted the article!

I've stumbled over a documentary on the backstory of Spacewar! itself uploaded by MIT recently: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0te5jEjfDrIUnfortunately no interviews with any of the original developers (though they gotta be old as hell by now), just some young-ish current MIT guys. Btw. here's some footage of the actual game running (about 30 seconds in): www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bzWnaH-0sg

I also remember playing Asteroids on my cousin's Mac and checking GameFAQs reveals that an official port indeed does exist.

I assume you mean Activision's Asteroids? It's listed now.

I added two games - Big Sky Trooper and Star Trek TNG: Future's Past. I knew both games (even completed Star Trek once), so I don't know why I didn't thought of including them before.
I also expanded the article to 8 pages. Now page 6 are all more complex games where the article focuses more on the space combat, so they are practically viable for standalone articles.
Also, one more freeware game mentioned (Space Pool Alpha).
I also want to include the 2007 Battlestar Galactica, but I'd need to find a way to play it first (it's been taken down from XBLA. I got the trial, but that's really short.)

Sadly the only way would be with a JTAG'd/RGH'd system.
Sucks that it isn't like with WiiWare games.

The article says the flyer of Moon War recites "The Perfect Moon Shot" but it's "The Ultimate Moon Shot".
Space Pool Alpha is a quirky little game. Nice addition.

Really great article! I have been reading it in chunks for the last few days.
One note: In the Asteroids section where is talks about the VCS port this is written, " In other news, there have been no sightings of UFOs on the VCS whatsoever." When I was little and we had our old wood-paneled 2600 I seem to remember being able to flip one of the switches on the unit to up the difficulty and trigger the appearance of UFOs. That particular machine is lost to time, so I can't verify this but I am quite sure I am not just imagining it. Can someone here check and see?

Difficulty A gives you UFOs and satellites.

Thanks! I was sure I wasn't imagining that. I remember being fascinated by that aspect of the 2600 port.

That's what I get for testing all the switches in Space War and none in Asteroids :\
Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I'll correct that soon, together with coverage of the BSG game.
EDIT: Update uploaded now.
