"The first one in this long history of conversions made Atari's very own home console, the VCS. This was a quite competent port, given the technical limitations of the hardware. Like with the VCS's Space War, the sharp looking vector graphics made way for huge pixel blocks. Back then, people would play it anyway, since it was the only version for a home console, but nowadays there are many far superior ports available. One interesting peculiarity of this port is the lack of any flying saucers in difficulty level B. Only setting the lever to A activates them"
I don't feel this comment is necessary and I feel it gives the 2600 version a bum rap. While other ports like the 7800 version are better, it's still a very good port on its own, especially when played on variations with fast asteroids and with the difficulty switch set to A. It also has the ability to play with shields and the a variation when you flip the ship to the other direction instead of shields or hyperspace. I prefer it over the slow Atari 800 version (which also has delayed response for shields, flip, and hyperspace, using the same controller compared to the 2600), though I haven't played it 4p since I have the 800XL with only 2 controller ports rather than the original 800.
Edited since the bolding didn't show up.
One thing worth mentioning is that there is a game for the 2600 Supercharger accessory (made mostly by staff that became part of Epyx), Suicide Mission, that started as a blantant clone of Asteroids called Meteoroids.
There's also a new homebrew Asteroids clone in the works for 2600 called Space Rocks.
