It seems that nobody here ever talks about sports games. There are good game-play based sports games that you do not have to like the sport to like. Does anybody here play sports games? I like the following genres:
oozumo (sumo wresting in America)
I would HIGHLY recommend any game for Super Famicom or Famicom. They are kind of like fighting games with elements of wrestling games.
golf
Almost any SNES or NES game are ok. Mario Golf for GBC is good and Neo Turf Master for NGPC and Neo Geo is amazing.
miniature golf
Mini Golf for Famicom is fantastic. Anybody familiar with other miniature golf games other than Zany Golf?
dodgeball
Super Dodgeball for NES, it's sequel for SFC, Go! Go! Dodge Leage for SFC, Super Dodgeball Advance for GBA and Dodgeball Kuy Kid for Genesis are must-haves.
bowling
Super Bowling for SNES, Championchip Bowling for Genesis and especialy League Bowling for Neo Geo.
Any other recommendations in these or other sports genres?

I always liked Ken Griffey on SNES (the 1st one)
Scratch that, LOVE. To this day still. It's the best I've ever played.
Not to be overlooked, check out the 3D Super Bases Loaded 2 on SNES... it's also very fun.

I enjoyed the Baseball Stars series on the NES, and the Baseball Simulator 1.000 games. In fact, baseball games on the 8 and 16 bit systems were a whole lot of fun. Pro Wrestling is a great NES game, but the Fire Pro series is better in every way. Fire Pro focuses on great gameplay and options and cares not for licenses, etc. I had fun with the Tecmo Football games also. That's about it for me. The more realistic sports games get, the less interested I become.

Baseball Baseball Stars - NES, NEOGEO
Tennis Virtua Tennis - DC Mario Tennis - N64 (wasn't a fan of the GCN version however)
Hockey NHL '94 - Genesis Mutant Hockey League - Gensis Ice Hockey - NES
Football Tecmo Super Bowl - NES
That's all I can think of

Tecmo Super Bowl is still the finest football game ever made IMO.
I guess I'd stick SSX in here even though it's not a "traditional" sports game.
Mutant League Hockey was pretty fun too, as was Deathrow. Again, not traditional though..

I actually enjoy the current Figtht Night and SSX games, though I would never buy them new because EA is evil. The NFL 2K games (when they were still being made) and DC Basketball 2K games were great. I also love the original Top Spin on the Xbox and NFL Blitz 2000 on the N64 (though that's hardly a sports game). Links on the Xbox was pretty sweet, too. For old school games I love Blades of Steel (NES), Ice Hockey (NES), Baseball Stars (NES), Neo Turf Masters (NGPC), Mike Tyson's Punch Out! (NES), Super Punch Out! (SNES), Telero Boxer (Virtual Boy), and Chavez boxing (SNES). Any of the Mario sports and Sega Soccer Slam are great, too. Also, I haven't played any of them but a lot of big soccer fans love Konami's Winning Eleven series better than EA's Fifa so you might want to give them a try.

I also forgot all of the Technosoft sports games including Kunio-Kun Soccer (PCE), Super Dodge Ball (NES, PCE), and Super Spike V-Ball (NES: how can I resist a four-player volleyball game where I can play as the Double Dragon twins?).

My personal faves... I actually think many early sports games are pretty good, but the entire genre just doesn't click with me nowadays. But good ones?
Tecmo Super Bowl (NES) Blades of Steel (NES) Double Dribble (NES) Ken Griffey Jr.'s Winning Run (SNES... never actually played Major League Baseball) Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (NES) Super Punch-Out!! (NES) The Super Sidekicks series (Neo-Geo) (the last one, SS4 [or Ultimate 11], offers a giant load of teams available for play) Neo Turf Masters (Neo-Geo) Windjammers (Neo-Geo... also not a conventional sport.) Mat Mania (Arcade) Pro Wrestling (Arcade) Saturday Night Slam Masters (Arcade)
... I played a bit of Fire Pro Wrestling for the SNES, but I never really learned well the controls. I should get back to it after reading up on an FAQ. I'm sure there are a few more that don't currently come to mind.

Hot Shots Golf- I really hate golf, yet this game (series) actually makes golf fun, even the PGA Tour games of old weren't this cool.

The two sports games I love happen to both be baseball games. 1. Ken Griffey Jr. Slugfest - Nintendo 64 The first baseball game that I actually had a lot of fun with. With the C buttons being used to move runners between bases, and the use of the analog stick to aim the pitch, that made the controls incredibly easy to learn - and subsequently own my brother at. 2. VR Baseball '97 - Playstation This one isn't as easy to control as Ken Griffey, but it seems to have more features to it (including a few stupid and worthless ones that are fun to screw around with, like the free-floating camera, the ball camera, and the ability to keep the ball in the hands of any baseman or outfielder indefinitely, run up to the pitcher and then toss the ball to him at point blank range). Oh, and before I forget to mention: Golf?
