I was not counting wrestling, and I only like some games of that genre, but any Fire Pro is good. With it's SFC installments being it's best, each better than it's last for that console. WWF RAW for SNES was ok. As was Saturday Night Slam Masters 1&2. There were maybe a few others that were ok also.
Tennis games are ok. I have Mario Tennis for GBC and Super Tennis and Super Family Tennis for SNES/SFC.
Great Swordsman was kind of a sports game. It was a arcade game with fifteen levels where it's first eight involved fencing or kendo.
If you count bullfighting games as sports games Bullfight was a awesome arcade game.
I do not like NFL games myself, but I do agree that Tecmo Super Bowl was that genre's peak.
As far as football/futbol/soccer games, I am not really into this genre, but Neo Geo World Cup (or whatever it was called) for Neo Geo and NGPC is my favorite of these. I also have Dolucky's A-League Soccer, which is decent for what it is, and Battle Soccer and Battle Soccer 2, which are playable but not recommended. Tecnos' two games were among this genre's best also. Konami's games are ok for this genre. I agree about Super Sidekicks. Those were among this genre's best games.
Anybody here play any less popular sports genres? Like volleyball or cricket or horseracing or whatever? Are there any games from less popular sports genres that are recommended?
What about fishing games? I always liked that fishing mini game from Wedding Peach. Are fishing games ever like that or are they eventless make-yourself-a-sandwich games?

Speaking of wrestling games, has anybody here played any other japanese exclusive SFC wrestling games? Gekitou Burning Pro Wresting and that Zen-Nippon series were ok.
For that guy who said he could not figure out Fire Pro's controls: what can you not figure out? Ask away. I can answer any questions about how to control that series.

I just can't get the general feel of it, soooooo... any input you can offer would be helpful. Grapples are especially a hassle. It just feels like nothing I do in one helps any.

Hasn't anyone ever played Base Wars? It's a great NES baseball game where the players are all robots. You can pitch the ball really slow and control it as it moves slowly, mind tricking the batter into swinging (or not swinging). When you get to a base where you would normally get an out, you can fight the base man and if you kick his ass you're safe! There's also a league mode where you can modify your players and buy them weapons and stuff.

I always liked ISS Deluxe on the SNES- was damn solid for its day. I would say Tecmo World Wrestling if wrestling was a sport

I have a tae kwan do game for SFC called Tae Kwan Do. It is ok. It is kind of like a fighting game. I also have a judo game for famicom or FDS, whichever it was, called Moero Judo Warriors or something like that, but I am not certain how to play it.

I forgot Pro Westling for the NES. I've played other ones on other systems, but I still think that classic is almost impossible to beat. While it has only 6 playable characters, the moves are simple, there's enough variety to make it sorta interesting, and the controls are easy to execute.
Nothing, and I mean nothing, can stop the Great Puma!

Jaleco's sports games are ok. Their Moero series of games, which was different sports, had better than average tennis and soccer games. They also made a ok golf game. Human made a soccer series called Super Formation Soccer that was ok.
What about non-Mario spin-off sports games? Like Mega Man Soccer or whatever. Are any of those good? Ultra League Soccer is ok. It has Ultra Man.

Ironically enough, that's the only way I was ever able to beat him.
