This is meant to be a general Super Mario Kart for SNES discussion thread for players of this game, and specificly for sharing track times, lap times, course times and strategies of any kind.
First of all I have not gotten gold on 100cc flower cup or 100cc star cup. How do you drift in this game? And how do you utilize it effectively? Are there any other strategies that I should learn? I have been racing with Koopa Troopa and releasing acceleration briefly while cornering. Is this not a good approach? How can I minimalize my times? Any and all strategies, explainations of how to take specific difficult corners, shortcuts, general racing strategies, general driving and kart control tips or strategies or whatever else would be appreciated.

I beat 100cc flower cup, but have yet to beat 100cc star cup.
Anybody else play this game? I started this so that people could contribute to a topic by playing a game rather than just talking about it.

First of all, never lower your speed. Drift by jumping while you turn as much as needed. Once you master this technique, switch to playing with Bowser which is the heaviest and faster option.

I play this with my fiance' a lot. We can match each other on the 50cc, but 100cc, and especially 150 cc own us. I have yet to perfect the powerslide and usually just end up getting my sorry butt owned by the other racers. Still, great game.

No matter what the game, TOAD OWNS YOU ALL.
... except in Mario Kart DS, where R.O.B. is the computer god of the circuit. Mario Kart is one of the only racing series that I even give a damn about, and ever since SMK, I've enjoyed the heck out of nailing Bowser with a Red Shell. I... cannot recall all of my accomplishments, but I believe I've unlocked the mirror tracks in MK64 and MKDS. Good times indeed!

I got gold on 100cc star and opened special cup. What are good strategies for that cup? Also could anybody tell me every shortcut that is possible in this game?

I love using the mushroom right before the big jump in Ghost Valley 1. That stage you also can use the feather to steal precious seconds off your lap... God what a game... I'm one of those who feel the SNES version is 10x superior to the N64 version... and I *like* the N64 version

I've beaten it on 150cc, but man was it ever irritating... I never wanted to play it again after that (until a week later).
You have to be either MAD SKILLED, or MAD LUCKY, to master this game, especially with how much cheating the CPU does. Not only is it important that you win, but who loses is also important. In particular, you don't want either of the Mario Bros. to get too close to you (for this reason I usually play as one of the Marios).
A few other tips:
1. If you get the Lightning bolt, make sure neither of the Marios are flashing, and/or that you're on a straightaway with minimal obstacles before using it.
2. If you get a star, the best time to use it is, again, on straightaways. This is important because Stars and Lightning Bolts are two things that can virtually garuntee a first place finish if you don't flub them, so DON'T FLUB THEM!
3. Try to stay on the track AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE unless you're using a shortcut. So often I've lost races simply because I went off-road
4. The feather can also be a game-winner. Find each and every shortcut you can make with it, and practice using them.
5. With power sliding, I tend to find you want to be close to the inner corners when using it, and you want to hold it as long as you can without spinning out, until you get on a straightaway.
6. When you're in the lead you tend to get crappy items (bananas and green shells) a lot. Best way to use these is to place them on a turn or right past an obstacle that the CPU has to jump over (or in the middle of a very narrow road). After jumps is best because the CPU otherwise has an annoying habit of being able to jump everything. Also it's worth practicing your aim... I was once so good that my green shells NEVER missed, but sadly I've lost that skill -__-.
7. Don't take any chances on Rainbow Road. Period.

I'm thinking- should there maybe be a game help section or a high score boasting one? I'm not too bothered but maybe some would appreciate it
