I bought this game at a pawn shop, and so far it's very fun... and really wild. I mean seriously, the character you play as can cover more distance in five seconds than any other NES hero I know of. He's, like, MOBILE.
Anyway I was wondering if anyone had some background info on this game--what the storyline is, what the game was known as in Japan, whether or not it has a tie-in to an anime or a manga (it seems like it should, but darned if I could place it), and if there's any sequels.

I remember reading in an old Nintendo Power that it was supposed to be the sequel to Legend of Kage. I don't know if that's accurate though.

In Japan it's called Fudou Myouou Den. Bloodreign knows more about this game.

Is this that game where your character can jump REALLY far and has a sword and has to fight jumping ninjas, or whatever it was?

It plays a lot like Legend of Kage too, though I believe Demon Sword has actual levels and the like, opposed to 4 or so repeating scenes. I've sampled the game, but never made the effort to get very far into it.
Kinda like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, isn't it?

I really like that game, but the "leveling" system is really odd. To extend your life bar have to have one black pearl and one red pearl and then die. Would have been better if your bar extended the moment you grabbed a black pearl, but whatever.
Music is really good, too.

Yeah anyone who liked Legend of Kage or Ninja Spirit NEEDS to play Demon Sword. Great port of a great arcade game.
Having both shurikens AND a sword at all times is awesome, you can descend through thin platforms like in Konami's platform games, the works. The game moves extremely fast for an NES title too. I love it. Blows away Legend of Kage in every way.

You just advance through the stages. After a few of them you're awarded a new piece of the sword.

Demon Sword has an arcade game? I've never heard of that. BTW, funny you make a post about Demon Sword and exactly the same day someone made a speedrun of it at tasvideos.org/

Fudou Myuou Den is a lot better than the US Demon Sword version, there are 13 stages instead of 7, though you do not get a life bar that you can build up, you earn hits by collecting little man shaped symbols. You can also turn into a dragon with a little dragon symbol that pops up now and again, and you can even find a little bird icon that makes a bird appear over your head, it flies around and kills enemies randomly.
There's also more types of magical items, a few more types of enemies, more uses for the phoenix item (US version only had the first stage that had holes in the ground, the Japanese version has more stages that have holes in the ground, if you fall into one of the holes and have a phoenix item, it saves your butt once for each symbol you have) and it's tougher than the US version by far. I also stick to the theory that it's a sequel to Legend of Kage, though the US manual for it says so otherwise (according to the manual you're Victar fighting the Dark Lord and the Dark Fiend).

Demon Sword has an arcade game? I've never heard of that. Most people haven't, I'd consider it one of those "was it actually released or not" games. All I know is I played it at a YMCA a billion years ago. Dedicated cabinet and everything. I'd kill to get my hands on it now. Remembeing it, I guess it could have been a bootleg of Ninja Spirit or any number of games with similar gameplay but it seemed too good to be just that.

It must have been a bootleg 'cause there would be some info about it on the net and I found none You know, the mind plays tricks when one is younger.
