Oh, speaking of Japanese names, one of my favorite renames is Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen. In Japan, it's just called "Kain the Vampire." Same difference, right? Heheheh...
And tangentially, one of my favorite Japanese movie renames is The Mummy. You'd think they'd go with the Japanese word for mummy, which is "Miira," or even just write it out in katakana as "Za Mamii." Either of those would be easy to pronounce and a perfect fit for the movie's English title.
But nope! Japanese name for the film? "Hamunaptra" (SP?). I know that's plot-relevant, but it's an awful title -- hard to remember, hard to spell and DEFINITELY hard to say, especially in Japanese.
Never understood that one.

It's strangeness probably made it more appealing

Totally Rad: This title can't get more generic. Oh, I don't know about that. Totally Rad is pretty generic and dull, but I've seen worse! Monster Hunter and Minecraft are the two that immediately come to mind. Those titles are descriptive, certainly, but a game about hunting monsters called Monster Hunter sounds less like a high-profile franchise and more like a $5 shovelware game in a K-Mart bargain bin.

To be fair, that's basically how the US market treats Monster Hunter.

What about Spider: The Video Game? Kinda makes it sound like a license title too.

Lightening Force: If you're going to change the name of a perfectly good title like Thunder Force IV, at least learn how to spell. Cacoma Knight in Bizyland: It just gets on my nerves for some reason. Spanky's Quest: It isn't so bad until you realize that Spanky is referring to the monkey. This seriously had to be the first time I encountered a reference to masturbation. Booby Kids/Booby Boys: Wrong on so many levels. Fat Worm Blows a Sparky: I'm not even going to explain why. Is it weird I played through all of these except the last one ? And I never played it but Blomby Car has to be the dumbest name for anything. Easy to name my #1 answer here: Dinosaur, and its remake Dinosaur: Resurrection. Looked this up, looks interesting.

In terms of bad character names, Lo Wang from Shadow Warrior is pretty awful now that I'm no longer 15.

The point is that "Rad" was a word that tried to put in every product (game, movie, comic, whatever) in order to sell, just like they were putting words like "Xtreme". www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=xtreme_bullshitSorry for posting Maddox article once again.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles is my absolute least favorite. Sonic and Knuckles 3 sounds wrong. Sonic 3 is hard to use around people who know there is a distinction. I talk about the game an awful lot too.
As for names, I play JRPGs so I know an awful lot. Suikoden and Dynasty Warriors come to mind. I can pronounce (butcher) Japanese names like a champ, but Chinese names are awful. Especially in regards to Suikoden which they get anglicized. And Cao Cao will always be my brothers favorite because he likes playing as Cow Cow. Also, my buddy refuses to believe he was ever known as Butz.

On topic: Legend of Zelda. I still don't understand why it's not called "Legend of Link." Final Fantasy 2-14.

That title alone was enough reason for me to not want to touch that game. You can't blame the developers for Tokyo Extreme Racing games though; the publishers in America just needed a more marketable title than Shutokou Battle.
