PS4 is a very good game, but lets not overreact It won't get into my top 10 RPG list, maybe not even the 15 top RPG list ...while it get's into my top 5. Oh, well. Different gamers, different opinions ;D

I've had the Phantasy Star Collection for GBA since last year, the only one I played was Phantasy Star 1 after that I got Tactics Ogre for GBA and then got distracted with that, then got shining force for GBA, still havent played II or III but i got II for Sega Smash Pack for my dreamcast and beat the first dungeon but I prefer the GBA one since the dreamcast versons music and sound effects give me a headache.

I'd definitely play 1 and probably 2 to fully appreciate PS IV. III is optional since it's more of a side story (that also leaves the door open for games like PSO and PSU), but there's enough Ah-ha! and really awesome references to past games in PS IV that the other two should be played (especially with a certain plot twist mid-way through PS II).

Do you need to play I-III to enjoy IV? No, not at all. It works very well as a stand alone game.
HOWEVER will you want to play I-III? Yes, as you'll appreciate the references and cameos in IV so much more. (As stated above though, the links to the rest of the series in III, while they DO exist (if anybody says otherwise, then they've never played it to completion), are fairly weak.)

Some weird translation issues result in a character from PS3 appearing in 4 (Wren), but only in the English version. They had different names in the Japanese versions. Pretty weird considering how they screwed up the consistency of everything else.
I wouldn't worry too much about the references to past games in PS4. Most of them were botched for the reasons mentioned above and some may not be apparent until after you've read around a bit.
PS1 is awesome for its time and still holds up better than every 8-bit RPG out there but it's still a throwback. Oddly enough I find that PS2 has aged less gracefully. Mostly because it's even more overly long/difficult. PS3 was never all that outstanding in the first place and looks even more ridiculous now, but it also isn't a terrible game.
