One more Sega CD FMV game for the pile. Will I try all of them? Maybe? This time it's Rocket Science's Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, a game I played a huge amount on Sega CD because it supports two players with one person driving the eponymous Cadillac and the other shooting. Trying to play this single player has all the same problems as many twin stick / loop lever to game pad conversion despite this being a home original. It's way too awkward to avoid large obstacles while also shooting at small ones. Like Loadstar, it's also way too hard while also fairly dull. The advantage this has is that there's more levels so more cutscenes although considering that they're comic art and mostly not animated, it probably would have been better to go with a traditional pixel art route. There's also an actual menu with your level progress saved so it's hypothetically more completable than Loadstar on Sega CD. It also notches up a bit higher due to supporting multiplayer. Still not intrinsically fun even with a proper dual stick set up if you can finagle it, but at least it is possible to get some enjoyment out of it.

JDarkside - Thanks for the detailed answer. windfisch - I found Metroid Prime 2 quite discomforting also, though not close to those extremes. I think I would have put the game down were I in your shoes.

Still playing Loop Hero, though I'm not making much progress as of now. Still stuck on the boss of the 2nd chapter (of 4 total), probably I still have to learn the intricacies of the gameplay or maybe need to gather much more resources and build more units in my village, since I'm not even damaging her that much. Probably I maxed the wrong stats, who knows, however I have the impression that bonuses from objects and perks do not give that much advantage... I'll have to read some guides then.

I think that's what I did back then, at least for a while. After all, there are still things I liked about it. It really depends on your state of mind, I suppose. When in a generally good mood, those sections would "just" feel like a chore or a mild headache to me.

Beat V2 for the last time in ULTRAKILL, love that bit in the second phase. Can't wait to see the Wrath levels.
Drowned God is really impressing me so far despite how obtuse it can be at times (comes with the territory of the era and genre). It really feels like everyone involved with this knew exactly how to bring this weird vision to life so stuff that should be really silly is instead atmospheric. Just wish the audio levels were better balanced, the music drowns out some voice audio at points, but not as much as I was lead to believe.
Got a Serious Sam-like called Limitless Hunger that the DUSK dev was talking about on twitter, looks extremely rough but I'm now realizing that was an artistic decision. Plan to try it later.
Also, looks like Inscryption is out, newest game from the Pony Island and The Hex guy. Another meta game, this time in the frame of a horror style card game. There's a demo floating around under a different name if you want an idea of what you're in for.
I still need to get around to Get In The Car Loser, Christine Love's new release, it just requires a controller and I can't be arsed sometimes to plug mine in. Looks like the current release is finally stable after a very rough launch.

I never thought I'd see a post go from something called Ultrakill to something called Pony Island (ok, I know what that one is). Only in video games.

ULTRAKILL might end up having a Pony Island reference in it one day. Heck, there are two secret areas dedicated to fairly well known youtube game reviewers, not to mention the legendary VN secret level and one based around The Witness.

It's been just about a month since I've been able to settle and play something now. I did have a second go at Fire Emblem Three Houses but bounced off it again. I really find the game time isn't well balanced between battles and downtime. Honestly, the monastery stuff just seems like an abstraction of what was better achieved previously via simple menu's. Now figuring out how to improves my skills and relationships has turned into a huge chore. I complimented Val Chron 4's handling of downtime recently and I think the key factors there are that it's gameplay is more complex, but also that the downtime is more passive. I think Three Houses would have worked better with either less downtime or less complexity in it. Hopefully the next entry is more focused. Anyway I brought Fates Conquest on my trip as a change of pace but I haven't touched it yet.
I am still planning to start either Code Veronica X or Fatal Frame 2 when I get back this weekend. I haven't decided which yet.
A small piece of news - Hamster Corporation (Arcade Archives) has filed a trademark for Console Archives, so it looks like we may be getting something different from then in future. Maybe they will work with Konami again to bring the PCE lineup (or spanky's dream Goemon collection). I look forward to finding out about what they have to come.

That's pretty cool. I really like Hamster's ethos - reasonably priced, no frills ports. They publish some pretty off the wall stuff and have gotten their hands on a few historically interesting titles (like Sky Skipper). There's still a ton of interesting games on old consoles that has never seen any kind of re-release. I'd love to see what they dig up. It would be cool to play all that false start 5th generation stuff I missed out on back in the day. You know, like Jaguar and 3DO games. I'd love to play Immercenary for example.

I'm expecting anything from their current Japanese clients. If Konami wants PC Engine and MSX titles of theirs ported, Hamster would be the perfect company for that.
3DO got me curious. It actually had more games released over there than in US. Much of that wouldn't do us any good as an import but there has been Japanese games with worldwide release such as Guardian War, Lucienne's Quest and Burning Solder. Hamster can also ask Square-Enix for Crystal Dynamics games too.

Console Archives, eh? That's very interesting. I'm putting my money on mostly PCE/SMS/MD games, but who knows. I can't think of any non-JP Arcade Archives, so it would be hilarious if they do Jaguar and 3DO.

I played a level of Limitless Hunger and it gets a thumbs up.
It looks bad initially, until you realize this is a piece of "outsider art" (unlike Cruelty Squad, which actively breaks art rules on purpose). Think Tails Got Trolled and you have an idea of what I'm talking about. There is real talent here, it's just all focused in areas you wouldn't expect from someone with more traditional experience or training. Enemies are all unique and easy to read, there's a surprising number of bosses (three in the first level), your guns often have weird but interesting designs (not sure why the assault rifle comes with a floating dog skull but he's my friend now), ect.
It plays sort of like Serious Sam, but you have a glory kill that runs on cooldown that you can launch from a distance via chain for health recovery, though it is best used on low tier enemies as higher ones can survive the hit. Lots of monsters, lots of shooting, ect.
I also like the surprising amount of voice acing. Your character is silent, but the important demons talk with varying degrees of acting talent and sound quality. My favorite bit so far is eating a burger at a fast food stand that accepts souls as payments but you have no soul due to a deal with a demon so then the cashier, who has extremely fuzzy audio quality, passionlessly tosses out a string of cusses that sound like something a 12 year old would say when caught in the middle of an argument with no further points.
It's great and dumb, basically.

Jaguar, Lynx and 3DO had some Japanese releases for Hamster to release worldwide, among what would be easy to market ones to import to Japan. Atari never did collections for the later stuff, 2600 and 5200 are on current platforms thanks to their Flashback collections. You know what would be insane and thanks to Hamster working with Namco can be made happen? Wonderswan. Has few import friendly stuff in there. btw, Mappy is this week's Arcade Archive. Weren't you looking for that one 🧀Son of Suzy Creamcheese🧀?

Yessir. With Rally-X and Xevious out and Mappy this week, I think we only need Galaxian to have the most obvious omissions from Museum on Switch.

Played New Ghostbusters II (NES) this morning.
I'm starting to think we need a companion thread to the Game Finish Challenge called the Game Fail Challenge for games we give up on or have to resort to cheating to beat. I got to the penultimate boss who is a good deal tougher than anything else seen in the game so far and lost my last continue.
I think everyone here knows about this game but this was only released in Europe and Japan and has nothing to do with the awful Imagineering-developed Ghostbusters II game released in the US. This was developed by HAL and is an overhead shooter with chibi-style graphics. You choose 2 Ghostbusters. I chose Winston (since he was cut from the Genesis game) and Louis (Yes, you can actually control Louis!). The one you control fires the proton beam and the other sets the traps. There isn't any difference between them however.
It's very simple but is addictive and punchy. Maybe a bit too simple? The levels are pretty large but the game tells you exactly where to go. You can venture off the beaten path but there does not seem to anything interesting in the empty rooms. There also really isn't anything in the way of secondary powerups or weapons.
The control feels a hair sticky to me - you can only travel in 4 directions and occasionally I'd get stuck on the corner of a wall or something and get hit. The enemy patterns are simple but the margin for error is a bit low. So the game ends up being generally pretty easy but unforgiving at the same time. You have 3 lives per continue, 3 continues and 1 hit per life. You can gain extra lives through points but certain enemies and bosses will cause you to run through your lives very quickly.
Anyway, I enjoyed my time with this, despite losing at the very end. It's probably better than the movie at any rate.
