ommadawnyawn2 - My thought mostly steer towards wondering why we were lumbered with an Atari ST instead of one of the better home computers. More understandably many of the games we ended up with were multi-pack releases and so we missed most of the noteworthy ones. I think it would be a good idea if you could do something to make the screenshots more recognisable. They're quite small and the best way to recognise several of them was scrolling up and down between the images and your text list. Just a suggestion, mind you. -- So I picked up Paper Mario and just like the first time around I'm having difficulty prying myself from it. The game feels just as fresh as the first time around with it's colourful dialogue and a simple, yet thoughtful combat system being highlights. The new coat of paint given is more than welcome; enhancing the eye-catching artwork of the original with new textures and tweaks that emphasise the visual design of the series. I'm not quite as enamoured with the rearranged soundtrack, though there's added complexity, some tracks lose the simplistic catchiness of the original versions. I've also put some time into Trials of Mana lately. Actually over the last month or so, but I'm only 6-7 hours in. It's actually quite good, but the simplicity of that game feels like a double-edged sword. On the one hand it allows for fun and intuitive combat for the most part, but on the other the lack of complexity really lets the game down in the story department (which is pretty much there to direct you to the next gameplay location) and also the skills system, where upgrade points feel wasted due to the restrictions put on how many skills can be equipped at once, and the lack of clarity on how to make use of spirit magic. There's quite a bit of room for improvement in the follow up. Hopefully it is able to retain the approachable design whilst adding greater depth.

Finally finished tombel raider 3. Been a white whale on my back since my PS1 memory card corrupted on the second last level. It's a lot meaner and not as well designed as TR1 and 2 but I still found it compelling, there's just something great about the old tank controls and how it's you against the environment. There's so much bullshit design though, I'm not sure how I managed to get so far on the PS1 version where save points were expendable collectables.
Other than that I'm playing contra 4 which feels like a great homage to the NES contra games.
Also been playing a lot of Shiren the wanderer on the DS. Wonderful game thats finally made me understand rogue likes. Gotten as far as floor 26 but the game gets really mean once you hit the mountain area.

Gotten as far as floor 26 but the game gets really mean once you hit the mountain area. This is one of those games where the post-game offers the best content. The main quest can pretty much be grinded out, but you need more strategy if you continue after the credits. I hope you stick with it.

I was kind of hoping it would be a short game as wanted to move on to some Gameboy and NGPC games on my analogue pocket.
The gimmick post game dungeons sound like a lot of fun. Is the 99 floor dungeons worth finishing out? I sounds kind of daunting, especially if there's enemies as mean as the arseholes on floor 26 that slapped my weapon right out of my hand.

Contra 4 is really good. I've actually been going through all my old DS and GBA stuff to sell as I don't really have any attachments to it. I tried out Contra 4 ostensibly to test it and I couldn't put it down. Think I might hold on to it a bit longer...

Well there's a limitation to the formatting on weebly when you're doing two collages per system but I restructured the article a bit and added some links to games mentioned. You can also click the gallery pics to zoom in in case that wasn't obvious

My main thing is that you mention that the Amiga has three eras, but combine the first two and split off the third. That was a little confusing to me. The Amiga also had its PowerPC era that I guess is still technically ongoing but that's outside of its Commodore ownership and not "fourth gen". I also have some quibbles about the dates for VGA adoption as my recollection is that VGA didn't fully become standard until closer to 1992/1993 on lower end hardware e.g. Apogee didn't publish their first VGA game until Wolf3D in 1992.

While looking into them more, I eventually decided to split off the third and so I give the clarification at the beginning of that segment, although it could be mentioned right away on first mention I suppose.
My amateur opinion is that you'd want to switch to VGA and probably a 386 too by 1991, or 1992 at the latest if you wanted to keep up with the major new releases and have them look and play like the developers wanted. Even if various games supported EGA, it started to look like an afterthought around 1990-1991. With some exceptions like Metal Mutant, Monkey Island and Roger Rabbit. I'm gonna rephrase that sentence a bit though and push it forward to "around 1991".

It depends what you mean by worth finishing. You're playing for the enjoyment and challenge in these games. If you want to keep playtime down I would say that the 99 floor dungeon can be quite the time sink. And yes, those disarming enemies are real buggers.

It depends what you mean by worth finishing. You're playing for the enjoyment and challenge in these games. If you want to keep playtime down I would say that the 99 floor dungeon can be quite the time sink. And yes, those disarming enemies are real buggers. Thanks. Sure I'll give it a go and maybe keep it in rotation. Had two horrible runs there that didnt even get to the mountain. Worse was I had all the tools to get out of them but got greedy.

I don't if this says more about Paper Mario TTYD remake or me, but I am so much more enamored with Picross S Namco Legendary Edition. There's so much love there that was totally absent in LogiartGrimoire which feels so much more crassly commercial. I guess I just don't have much nostalgia for TTYD. It's always at the front of my mind that the final boss has an overly long and unskippable cutscene in the middle which I am just dreading.

Mostly it just says how much you love Picross.
TTYD can be slow at times but I hear the new warps fix some of that at least. I’m thinking of dropping Unicorn Overlord for it. Unicorn Overlord is good and I have 12 hours on it, I’m just not really feeling tactics RPG right now.

Picross is poison. I played it for months on my switch and played nothing else. A quick game before Mario turned into hours of picross. It's so addictive. Doubt it's down to paper Marios quality.
I think they added the ability to skip that Cutscene or at least restart the battle after it.

It's nice to hear that there's at least the possibility that there is that change. It's the only time I can think of that I literally gave up at the final boss.

Am I hearing correctly that Namco Picross was fumbled with the non-inclusion of Wonder Momo, though? What's the point, then?
If you're talking Mario Wonder I would say that is a quality issue.
