Didn't see this thread before cause I never look in the "Off topic" section. But yeah, as a matter of fact I'm gay myself. I came out over 10 years ago to basically everyone, and after that I rarely talk about it, dunno why. It doesn't define who I am, I guess? Sounds like a cliché, I know. But my interests are video games, movies, music... so I figure it wouldn't interest anyone to know who I'm dating or whatever... But I'm happy to see other gay gamers. I have a couple of lesbian friends who are gamers, but only one male gay gamer friend. Coincidence, I guess.

Isn't that the way it should be? Gay or straight, your sexual orientation shouldn't define your every waking moment. Unless you're a furry, and then all bets are off.

Given how much we talk about romantic matters around here, (that is, basically never) it's more like a random fun fact than anything. Like, say, saying somebody likes pineapple on their pizza. Which, no matter what gender or orientation you are, will always be a terrible idea. That said, though, thanks for posting and coming out! I'm honestly really happy we've gotten some people to talk in this thread, and I hope it's helped.

You made a little typo in that last post, so I took the liberty of fixing it. Like, say, saying somebody likes pineapple on their pizza. Which, no matter what gender or orientation you are, will always be a terrific idea. There, much better.

It's funny though that more often than not I'm being defined by other people. The majority of my friends are straight and they talk about it much more than I do. Also, when I meet new people and they find out about my sexual orientation they say things like "So, how was the gay pride festival this year?" or "Are there any good gay clubs in the city?", and I have to tell them that I don't know, cause I'm not part of that scene. And it confuses the hell out of them. I'm not actively trying to "stay away" from it, but it just never interested me. But I know that they're trying to be nice and show that they're fine with it, and it's definitely better than people being homophobic, which thankfully hasn't happened to me in maaaany years. Stockholm is a cool city that way. Homophobia is frowned upon. I actually once witnessed a drag queen being harrassed by a two guys (nazi's by the look of it) on the subway, and then another group of teenage kids told the nazi's to leave her alone. And they eventually did! It warmed my heart.

It's kind of sickening, like in the old days when white people assumed that all the black people in town knew one another.

That's not the old days, white people still think that about pretty much every race.
Source: I'm white and other white people like to confide their racist thoughts to me, for some reason.

And they eventually did! It warmed my heart. Stuff like that is part of why I try to assume as little as possible about people I meet. Even if a certain viewpoint or background is statistically more common with a certain group of people, I won't assume that someone from that group who I'm meeting also has those characteristics. Usually situations like that where someone incorrectly assumes something about a person can be incredibly awkward, so I try to avoid having that happen.

Even an acquaintance of mine who thinks he's the most progressive person he knows (to the point where he constantly says anybody less progressive then him should be killed) just went on a rant about how much he hates Mexicans (even though he tried to preface it with "I know I'm not supposed to, but..."). Then he begged everyone to tell him he's not racist, and of course, they all gave him a pat on the back and said no, he's still a champion of diversity.
